Story
Veterinary professionals are often seen as calm, compassionate caregivers who help animals recover and bring comfort to families. What is far less visible is the emotional weight carried behind every working day.
In veterinary practice, there is constant movement between hope and heartbreak. One moment may involve saving a life; the next may require guiding a family through the loss of a beloved companion, or making the difficult decision to end suffering when no other options remain. These decisions are made under pressure, with responsibility resting heavily on those delivering care.
It takes immense emotional strength to absorb the sadness of others while still showing up with care, focus, and kindness. Many in the profession carry these experiences quietly, driven by a deep commitment to animal welfare and the people who love them.
Veterinary professionals experience exceptionally high levels of stress and mental health strain compared to many other professions, with elevated rates of burnout and suicide within the field. The causes are complex, but at the heart of it is a profession built on empathy.
This 100,000-step challenge in 24 hours is a reflection of that unseen journey - a long and demanding effort symbolising the endurance, resilience, and emotional distance travelled every day by veterinary professionals.
It is also a reminder that they are not just clinicians, but people who need understanding, support, and space to be supported in return. Organisations like Vetlife exist to provide that lifeline, offering help when the weight of the profession becomes too heavy to carry alone.
This challenge will be undertaken without headphones or music, allowing space for reflection on the struggles we face within the veterinary profession and the importance of mental health awareness. I would also like to extend an open invitation to every veterinary professional to join me for any part of the walk, which will take place in the New Forest.
