Story
What is this?
The short version: I will be singing karaoke at a venue in and around Portsmouth every night for the whole of July. This is to raise money for The Roberts Centre, a charity that does fantastic work with families in the Portsmouth area. If you see me out and you like my performance, please consider donating!
The long version:
I love karaoke. It's amazing fun, and I've been lucky over the last couple of years to have been able to sing regularly and have people (apparently) enjoy it! I've made a great many friends and it's got me through a pretty bad time mentally. I consider myself incredibly lucky to be able to do something like this at all, let alone regularly.
So I thought ... is there a way I can use this to do some good for other people? The Karaoke Challenge was born. Somewhere in and around Portsmouth has a karaoke event every single night of the week, every week - so I'm going to try to attend one every day for the whole of July.
It seems silly. I feel silly typing it out. But gosh darn it I had the idea and I'm going to see it through!
Who is this for? Where will your donation go?
Please let me introduce https://www.robertscentre.org.uk/
I'll defer to them to explain what they do:
Having no home is the tip of the iceberg; we help families tackle the underlying and often complex issues which can lead to homelessness. We work with people who are struggling with anxiety and depression, other mental health issues, family relationship breakdown, parenting challenges, poverty, social isolation and many other difficulties. We offer practical help and support to enable people to manage their money, home and children. We actively seek to make a difference and support families to achieve a positive outcome.
We place particular emphasis on meeting the needs of children. Poverty affects one in four children in the UK today. When children grow up poor they miss out on things most children take for granted – warm clothes, school trips, having friends over for tea. They do less well at school and earn less as adults. Any family can fall on hard times and find it difficult to make ends meet. We help parents to learn the skills needed to keep a safe roof over their children’s heads and be the parental role model their children need.
I was introduced to the charity by a friend I made through karaoke, and they made particular mention of the contact centre services that The Roberts Centre provide. It's an entirely unglamorous but extremely necessary service to help children through what might be the most difficult time of their lives.
I couldn't be more happy that they have agreed to link up with me for this challenge.
This sounds great, what can we do?
Come and see me! I'll be posting updates in a Facebook group, announcing where I will be and any other fun challenges that will be coming along the way.
Please check it out, please come out and see me and PLEASE, if you can, DONATE!
Much love,
Wolf
