I'm Writing for Refugees as part of Refugee Action's Race for Refugees month because I believe that everyone deserves safety, dignity and hope for the future. But for far too many refugees, this is the last thing they are greeted with when they arrive in the UK.

While others fundraise by committing to miles or flexing muscles, I'm pledging to write 500 words a day throughout September - I want to focus on creative energy over outrage, and use some of those words to contribute compassion, empathy, and understanding to the discourse.

I know how it feels to live in a liminal space, to search for home and belonging across borders - and I'm grateful I could always be sure of a soft landing and security along the way. That reassurance shouldn't be a privilege - every human deserves safe refuge.

Refugee Action exists to defend the right to safety that we all share. They’re fighting the hostility that has a devastating, daily impact on refugees. I'm joining them in the fight for people seeking safety to have the support and opportunities to thrive, not just survive.
