Story
Hi, my name is Lyn Kearney, I am 75 years old and I am so excited to have been selected to play tennis for Team GB at this year’s World Transplant Games in Dresden, Germany
I received a kidney transplant 7 years ago from an anonymous donor and competed for Edinburgh Transplant Team at the British Transplant Games in Coventry (2023) and last year in Nottingham, winning the gold medal each time in my age category – super super veteran. Competitors, all of whom have received an organ or bone marrow transplant, compete across 17 sports and activities, ranging from archery to volleyball.
The World Transplant Games are held every 2 years and bring together transplant athletes of all ages from over 60 countries to celebrate the gift of life; to thank all the donors and donor families who have made it possible for us to enjoy active and fulfilling lives once again; and to encourage everyone to sign up to the National Organ Donor Register. Please think about it, go on the website www.organdonation.nhs.uk and record your decision. Living donors, donor families and supporters make up the contingent who will be heading to Dresden in August.
Members of the GB team pay their own expenses. Many would-be competitors may be discouraged from accepting this wonderful opportunity to showcase the benefits of keeping active after transplantation, promoting organ donation and representing their country, by the costs involved. I am therefore hoping to raise funds (not for myself) but for Transplant Sport Team GB. Any contributions raised will help to support the team coaches, medics, physios, managers and others who volunteer their time and skills to make this event possible.
