JLR Challenge 2.0 - Supercharged Turbo Snails · 21 September 2024

We are WWT the wetland restoration charity. We’re on a mission to restore wetlands because they are a wondrous solution to the problems our world faces. Together we will unlock their power – and help nature burst back to life. Because when wetlands flourish, all life will flourish.

Story

Supercharged Turbo Snails will be racing in JLR Challenge 2.0 for glory but most importantly for raising funds to support the "Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust" (WWT) Charity.

Why Wetlands?

- Wetlands range from giant deltas and mighty estuaries and mudflats, to floodplains, lakes, lagoons, peat bogs, and ponds.

- Wetlands provide essential protection against climate change, floods by storing rain and by buffering us from the sea. Wetlands can also protect us from droughts and reduce air temperatures by up to 10 degrees Celsius.

- Wetlands are the most effective carbon sinks on the planet.

- They are one of the world's most biodiverse habitats and 40% of the worlds plants and animals depend on wetlands.

- Wetlands not only hold most of our available fresh water, they also improve its quality by naturally filtering pollutants.

- 35% of our Wetlands have disappeared since 1970 and they are disappearing three times faster than forests

WWT work - Create, Protect and Restore Wetlands

- Conservation of 10 Wetland reserves in the UK.

- Wetland Conservation Unit implement programs in the UK and internationally to conserve habitats and species.

- Restoring floodplains and lost farmland ponds to help increase biodiversity, store carbon, improve soil and water quality.

- Participate and act on International Project to save critically endangered species.

- Educate and empower young people to improve the environment in their communities through the Blue Influencers initiative.

The Challenge

On 21st September we will race against 79 other teams on an 11 hour hike of minimum 15 miles, going through physical and mental challenges along the way.

All with the goal of finishing the race and smash the target set for our fundraising.

Therefore, as a team we are intending to walk, cycle, run and even golf the distance from Whitley to Elan Valley (where the challenge is to take place). This accounts to an overall distance of 1008 km where we are tracking our progress in Strava.

Please see below the current status and shall update this regularly.

Donations will help motivate us to reach the target distance.
