Torbay Half Marathon · 29 September 2024

Sepsis accounts for 48,000 deaths annually in the UK, that’s more than breast, bowel and prostate cancer put together. Sepsis is what happens when our immune system overreacts to an infection. Symptoms initially present as flu like but can rapidly deteriorate into a life threatening condition.

Story

I will be running the Torbay Half Marathon this September for the UK Sepsis Trust.

In 2018 I was hospitalised with Sepsis. At the time I had no idea what Sepsis was, and I think it’s important to create awareness to save lives.

What is Sepsis?

Sepsis is your bodies life threatening reaction to an infection, in which your immune system overreacts to an infection and starts to damage its own tissues and organs. Anybody can get sepsis from any infection (bacterial, viral etc).

Symptoms include:

• Extreme shivering • Confusion

• Muscle Pain • Rapid Heart Rate and Lightheadiness • Fever
