Story
I’ve been a runner for years and have completed several half-marathons, but never a full one. After missing out on a spot in the London Marathon once again, I decided to take on an even bigger challenge - the Great Wall Marathon in China. This race isn’t just the full marathon distance; it also features tough terrain, steep hills, and countless steps!
It’s a huge personal challenge, and I’ve chosen to use this opportunity to raise funds for Yateley Industries for the Disabled, a small but vital local charity.
About the Charity
Founded in 1935, Yateley Industries for the Disabled is one of the last UK workshop/factories solely employing disabled people. By offering work, they empower individuals with disabilities to contribute meaningfully to their communities.
The charity employs 60 people, some for as long as 30 years. In addition, they run a community pantry supplying food and other essential items to over 700 families that are struggling financially for a small weekly contribution. They fund a huge part of this themselves as well as relying on donations and have recently opened our community hub which includes a café and spaces available for hire. To continue providing these vital services the charity relies on income from charitable grants, corporate foundations and the incredible individuals who offer their continued support.
Funds raised will go to support the charity's mission of providing opportunities for our disabled staff and residents through the ongoing improvement of the factory, community hub, and outdoor spaces, which offer work, housing, and social and leisure activities.
About the challenge!
Since its inception in 1999, the Great Wall Marathon has a reputation as one of the world’s most challenging marathons.
Starting with 350 runners, the event is now a sell-out with 2500 entrants.
The route goes along the spectacular Great Wall of China, through local villages and includes hills and the challenging last steps of the tower (5,164 to be exact!).
I’ve already started training, as the race is now less than 100 days away! I’ll be sharing updates on my training journey along the way.
