Our Ultramarathon Challenge for Lung Cancer Research

Robin Whalley is raising money for Oncogene Cancer Research

Isle of Wight Ultra Challenge 2026 · 2 May 2026 to 3 May 2026 · Start fundraising for this event

Oncogene Cancer Research is a cancer patient & family-led charity funding & advocating for medical research into oncogene-driven cancers, like EGFR, ALK & others that originate in the lungs. Our mission is to increase the life expectancy for people w/ these cancers. We believe Research Saves Lives.

Story

Back in May 2025 our Young Lungs team, led by Sarah Li who has been diagnosed with EGFR+ Stage IV lung cancer, signed up to the first half of the Isle of Wight Ultra Challenge, around 54km in one day.

It was an incredibly hard effort that pushed all of our physical and mental limits but thanks to the support for each other, we succeeded as a team to cross the line and collectively raise over £14,000 for the TracerX research study, led by Professor Charles Swanton, aimed at understanding the genetic evolution of lung cancer.

So now, a year later, we are aiming to complete the second half of the Isle of Wight Ultramarathon Challenge which would see us complete a full loop of the island, and we have decided to do so by raising more money for lung cancer research, this time for the wonderful Oncogene Cancer Research charity co-founded by Yvonne Diaz and Jan Clark which has the mission of increasing the life expectancy of people living with oncogene-driven lung cancers (such as EGFR+, ALK+ and more), and one day find a cure.

We want to thank everyone who will read this and make a donation to our cause, you are making a real difference!

With love and gratitude,

The Young Lungs: Return to the Island team.
