"Quiet spot for several decades, now the countries at the EU’s eastern border are burning. Thousands are behind bars on political charges in Belarus, and many more have fled abroad from prosecution. Hundreds of thousands have been killed following the invasion into Ukraine. Millions were forced to leave both countries and are now stranded in the EU and beyond, unable to return home. This is the situation which everyone hoped will never again become reality after the fall of the USSR. However, it is happening.

People released from political prisons in Belarus will never be able to regain their health. Thousands of Ukrainian children have been taken into Russia against their will in order to be re-taught the new ideology with the ultimate objective of wiping their identity. More and more people who fled to Europe are facing expiring passports and inability to restore them as their government refuses to process new applications abroad and demands that those wishing to do so return home - and possibly face prosecution. Without valid passports, it is impossible to apply for or renew residence permits, put children into schools, maintain open bank accounts, or rent apartments. This means falling into poverty for many.

There is a risk of further escalation. The Russian government already blackmailed Europeans and Americans with the threat to use atomic weapons should things go the wrong way for Moscow. This month, the Belgian defense minister traded threats with the former Russian president on what will happen in case Russia uses an atomic bomb. If this were to become a horrible reality, millions more will be displaced in the region.

People who fled prosecution have left their country with nothing, driven by the only desire - to get to safety and avoid years of political prison. Now, as the interest to support them has waned, more and more are facing homelessness and inability to legalise their status or secure jobs due to expired passports and no way to renew them.

I am raising funds to provide emergency assistance to thousands of those who are arriving in Poland and Lithuania fleeing political repression. Many of them are coming to Warsaw and Vilnius with little more than the clothes they carry. They face an uncertain future where they need to legalise their status, learn a new language, get a new job, find an affordable apartment - all of that often without any starting funds and with an expired passport.

Funds which I’ll raise will go to Polish and Lithuanian initiatives which have, since 2020, provided shelter, legal support, and medical rehabilitation to more than a thousand victims of political persecution. These organisations maintain a network of more than ten shelters across both Poland and Lithuania which proved to be a lifeline for many, whose old world has been completely uprooted. Funds will be spent to maintain those shelters and provide legal and psychological support for the new arrivals. And once this is in place, we know that the rest they can do on their own.

Belarus Free Theatre was established to resist censorship in Belarus, offering a rare space for audiences to engage on themes which are otherwise taboo. The company was soon forced underground and the artistic leaders exiled to the UK, but this has only strengthened our determination to resist dictatorship! Please help our brave & dedicated team in Minsk who rely entirely on philanthropy and risk their own freedom every day just by performing and teaching the next generation of ‘artivists’. Your support is an act of solidarity !
