Story

A lot of you know that I love running and have done for years, but I’ve never ran a marathon before. A lot of you also know the reason why I’ve always previously fundraised for Cancer Research, so why Meningitis Now?

Up until 30 December 2022, I didn’t really know much about Meningitis, the various types or the long lasting effects it can have. I very quickly had to educate myself when George and I had to take my sister to A&E. Laura had bacterial meningitis and sepsis, both of which would have been fatal if she had been left any longer. Laura spent two weeks in hospital, with the first two days in Resus hooked up to all sorts. Those first few days, plus when we went to collect her from her flat, will forever be etched into my memory. I can’t begin to explain how poorly she was. She couldn’t stop being sick, she was incoherent, and could barely walk or talk. I will always be grateful to the A&E team at NNUH who acted so quickly and saved her life.

I promised Laura that I wouldn’t focus too much on her story, but it’s important to explain why I’m running for Meningitis Now. Nearly 10 months on, Laura is still very much recovering and understanding what her new ‘normal’ is. She still has a lot of long lasting effects that will stay with her, but I’m so proud of her for embracing them 🧡

Since she was discharged from hospital in January, the care and support she needed hasn’t always been there, but she now finally has some answers. Meningitis Now have recently published a report on post hospital discharge care, and unfortunately, Laura’s story is very common. Meningitis Now have done, and continue to do, amazing work, both supporting individuals recovering from meningitis, and also raising the profile around the fact that more needs to be done post discharge.

This charity and its work is incredibly close to my heart 🧡 January was another reminder for me that life is far too short!

I would be so grateful to anyone who would like to support me and donate to Meningitis Now. Thank you 🧡
