Story

Hi, my name is Zara and on November 2nd, I will be taking part in a skydive in loving memory of my baby nephew and godson, Asa Jack Wrigley. I am raising funds for Blue Skies Hospital Fund for the new Maternity Swan Suite (previously the Forget-Me-Not Suite).

Asa Jack Wrigley | 19.04.19, 6:44am | 1lb 5oz

On April 19th 2019, my beautiful nephew, Asa, was born sleeping.

My sister (Michelle) and brother-in-law (Matt) went for their 20 week scan. We had no idea that walking out of that appointment would fill us with so much sadness and uncertainty for the future. Following weeks of scans and appointments in Manchester, Sheffield and Blackpool, the outlook was bleak and there was no way my baby nephew would survive.

Our family’s world was shattered in an instant.

It’s hard to put into words the pain of losing him. There will always be someone missing in our lives, but he will forever live in our hearts.

I was only 14 years old at the time and never experienced any kind of significant loss but this was a pain I had never ever felt before. To be 14 years old sitting front row at my first funeral, being my nephew, seeing a casket so small absolutely broke my heart. From that moment in time, I realised I had to mature very quickly to support Michelle, Matt and my family through this upsetting time.

The following weeks and months for Michelle and Matt were very traumatic, having to arrange his funeral, design his headstone and grieve for Asa whilst trying to put on a brave face for Roman (Michelle’s son) who was 6 at the time.

We are so grateful for all the amazing midwives at Blackpool Victoria Hospital and Forgot-Me-Not Suite who enabled us to spend, as a family, unlimited time with Asa along with many special keepsakes created before his final goodbye.

The Forget-Me-Not Suite provides comfort to many families who, when they lose a baby, often the only memories families have are of their time spent in hospital. This makes their experience and their environment where they’re cared for, even more important.

In memory of our precious Asa, I’d be grateful for any donations which will help this charity in continuing to support families going through something nobody should ever have to be faced with 🤍🐘
