Story
Assalamu alaikum dear friends and family,
I am fundraising for Maa Global, a charity striving to improve the dire situation in resource-poor settings to bring about safe, effective, high quality maternal healthcare to the mothers of Bangladesh. This is a cause very close to my heart as a 3rd generation British Bangladeshi studying here as a medical student. I have an interest in global health and women’s health, and the work Maa is doing in Bangladesh is incredibly important in closing the disparity in care that mothers receive in developing countries. We are so fortunate in this country to have access to the healthcare and resources we do, and this is the perfect opportunity for us to give back to the communities that don’t have the sams.
“According to the World Health Organisation, women in Bangladesh are 21 times more likely to die from maternal causes compared to the UK.”
JourneyMaa is a project that takes UK students and young professionals to Bangladesh to volunteer at Maa’s maternal health clinics. The team will work within the local community clinics and deliver educational workshops to mothers and young girls to equip them with vital health information.
If Allah wills, I hope to be joining the team this summer to volunteer at the health camps and gain a first-hand experience of maternal care in urban and rural resource-poor settings.
