EQUAL JUSTICE FOR ALL REGARDLESS OF RACE
If you, like me, are a passionate believer in Equal Justice for All Regardless of Race please consider sponsoring me as I plan to do my first ever sponsored event the 10k London Winter Walk –for the Zahid Mubarek Trust (ZMT Charity No: 1127834, Patron: Professor Nick Hardwick CBE).
ZMT is an independent national charity founded by the family of 19-year-old Zahid Mubarek who was murdered by his racist cellmate on the morning of his release from Feltham Young Offender Institution.
ZMT works for long term change in the UK prison system, ensuring racial justice and fairness, and supporting the rehabilitation and (re)integration of prisoners.
The Shocking Statistics:
• 52% of all children in custody are from a black, Asian or minority ethnic background (Youth Custody Service 2019)
• Black men are 26% more likely than white men to be remanded in custody. (Ministry of Justice – 2019)
• Over 27% of the prison population in England and Wales, 22,619 people, are from a minority ethnic group (Ministry of Justice – 2019)
Zahid Mubarek – A Young Life Needlessly cut short:
• In January 2000, 19-year-old Londoner Zahid Mubarek was sentenced to serve ninety days at Feltham Young Offender Institution for his first ever conviction for shoplifting £6 worth of goods from a supermarket
• During his time at Feltham, he was a model prisoner and made repeated requests to be moved to a different cell from his racist cell mate. The requests were recorded and ignored.
• On the morning of his release, only a few hours before he was due to leave, he was murdered while he slept by his racist cell mate who repeatedly beat him about his head with a broken table leg
• Zahid’s last words to his dad had been “Dad I get out at 8:00am. Don’t be late”
• The subsequent public enquiry, chaired by The Honourable Mr Justice Keith, concluded Zahid’s death had been “entirely avoidable”
Together with your donations we can help to avoid another racist murder like young Zahid’s and improve our prison system for all people of colour.
Thank You!
