Freezing temperatures. Gale winds biting my cheeks incessantly. Decreasing levels of oxygen. Decreasing levels of enthusiasm. Numbness settling in the extremities. Lungs gasping for air. Legs heavier than lead. Exhaustion. Agony in body and mind. That monotone never-ending zigzag. Motivation rock-solid. Keep walking. Step after step. Keep walking. Until reaching the summit.

This summer I’m heading back to the mountains, to go through all the aforementioned, combining the hike with charity for The HALO Trust. The primary focus of HALO’s work is on clearing landmines and unexploded bombs left behind by conflict across many regions worldwide. HALO also works alongside governments to help reduce the risk of illicit diversion of weapons. Conflict negatively affects nature and HALO implemented multiple environmental projects too.

I am part of all this, working for HALO on programmes. In my free time I’m also an avid gardener. Some of my fellow colleagues will know it all too well, whichever programme I’m deployed to, the longer I stay the more plants I’ll have on my desk in the office. And in my room. Chances are I’ll grow veggies too if there is a good spot in the compound. Therefore, my love for nature is partnered with this fundraising.

I’ll be travelling to Bolivia to climb its highest peak, the majestic Mount Sajama, standing at a terrifying altitude of 6542m above sea level. In line with the peak, the goal is to raise £6,542. Your kind contribution will go directly to HALO’s Sri Lanka programme supporting its environmental project. This project focuses on mangrove rehabilitation, training in sustainable practices, climate awareness and the installation of solar panels among other initiatives to support local communities.

Mount Sajama is located within the Sajama National Park, the first area to be declared protected in Bolivia to preserve the unique biodiversity, such as the Queuña forests, geysers, hot springs and the Andean wildlife. Interesting fact: in 2001 a historic football match was played on the glacier-covered summit of the mount demonstrating that football can be played at extreme altitude.
