1 in 5 children in the UK are affected by their parents' alcohol problems. They are often frightened and isolated, with no one to turn to for help. Nacoa responds by providing a free, confidential telephone, 1-2-1 chat and email helpline.

Story

NACOA (The National Association for Children of Alcoholics) is a Bristol-based charity founded in 1990 to provide help and support for everyone affected by a parent’s drinking.

1 in 5 children in the UK live with a parent who drinks hazardously, and millions of adults continue to be affected by their parent’s drinking or the lasting effects of growing up in a home where alcohol was, or is, a problem.

Having tackled a few half marathons over the past 3 years, I am finally taking on a full marathon now that I've turned 30—and what an absolute honour it is to be able to raise money for NACOA in the process.

This charity is extremely close to my heart. I had a very challenging childhood, some of which stemmed from my dad’s alcoholism, resulting in mental health difficulties that led to my hospitalisation, as well as challenges I still live with today. While I now understand that alcoholism is an illness, it took me a long time to realise that I was not responsible for the adults around me.

As a consequence of his drinking, we were estranged throughout my teenage years following my hospitalisation. When I was 21, my dad lost his life to alcoholism. It brings a very complex kind of grief—losing a parent twice: once when I had to cut him off, and again when he died.

I wish I had known about NACOA when I was younger. I can’t fully express how much of a lifeline this charity can be for children of alcoholics. Children in these situations often have to grow up far too quickly, and it can feel incredibly lonely. NACOA makes sure you know that you are never alone.

NACOA believes every child has the right to a happy childhood and the chance to live a creative and meaningful life. When alcohol becomes the family secret, children are significantly more likely to experience neglect, family conflict, and other challenges at home—this is where NACOA steps in to provide support, understanding, and hope.

NACOA relies heavily on donations to keep its helpline available for children and adults affected by parent's drinking. Any donation, no matter how small, truly makes a difference and helps provide support for children growing up in situations like mine.
