September is Suicide Prevention Month, and this event is all about raising awareness, breaking the stigma around mental health and suicide, and celebrating the importance of every life.
This will be a fun, positive event where we come together to support one another, spread hope, and remind people that they are never alone. 🫶
I think it's time for me to share my struggles and my mum's story.
In May 2015, my world and my family's world changed forever.
On 21st May 2015, I lost my mother to suicide.
She had been recovering from breast cancer treatment, which had been successful. The cancer was gone, and she was preparing to have preventative radiotherapy to reduce the chance of it returning.
At that time, she seemed to be in good spirits. We were celebrating the positives of her recovery. I remember seeing her just a few days before she left this world. She was happy, showing me that her nails were growing back and that her hair was returning. She seemed to be starting to feel like herself again. I had no idea that on the following Wednesday, she would be gone.
Even now, I still struggle with this loss. Writing these words brings back powerful emotions.
But I believe that being open and talking about our struggles can be incredibly healing. That's why I'm sharing this with you.
I want to help break the stigma around mental health and suicide and encourage more open conversations. Sometimes, we have no idea what someone is going through. A simple message, phone call, or check-in with a friend, family member, neighbour, or colleague could make all the difference 💕
Together, we can save lives. 🫶
Life can be tough. Sometimes it feels like nobody else understands. If it’s all getting too much to handle you can talk to Samaritans. They won’t judge or tell you what to do. They’re there to listen so no-one has to face tough times alone. Every 10 seconds, Samaritans answers a call for help. Samaritans can be contacted round the clock, for free, on 116 123, day or night, 365 days a year. It’s only your donations and 23,000 listening volunteers that make sure Samaritans can be there for someone today, so they can believe in tomorrow.
