So after a long summer of training and messing about at regattas, the CCRC Zippy crew have decided to give it one more push - this time over a mere 31 miles - before calling it a day. And all in the name of charidee. The Boston Rowing Marathon is an annual head of the river race run over a 31 mile course on the River Witham between Lincoln and Boston (UK). The course was first rowed in 1946 as a private challenge for a coxed four from Boston Rowing Club. Presently the race attracts in excess of 200 entries, covering the complete spectrum of the rowing community from the highly competitive to the more recreational crews, with many hoping to break a course record, raising money for their local charity, or just even to say they've done it! A couple of the crew members' families have been hit by Alzheimer's, so we thought it appropriate to make The Alzheimer's Society our chosen beneficiary. Alzheimer's Society is the leading support and research charity for people with dementia, their families and carers. There are 750,000 people with dementia in the UK with numbers set to rise to one million by 2021. The Society's fight for a better world for people with all types of dementia takes a wide range of forms. Through their network of local services, they touch the lives of over 30,000 people every week, providing practical services and support for people with dementia and their carers. Every year, more than a million people make use of the information they provide. Through campaigning and lobbying, AS strive to influence government policies and raise awareness of the challenges faced by people with dementia and the people who care for them. And through their research programme they work to improve their knowledge of dementia and its treatment - and pursuing the ultimate goal of finding a cure.
