Story
I have committed to taking part in the GREAT NORTH RUN on 9 September to raise money for Cystic Fibrosis Care.
I began my training 10 weeks ago from 0. Many of you know the reasons why I am donning my old running shoes again for CF to raise funds for those in difficulties. I hope to beat my last GNR time of 3hrs 40mins so many years ago in 2003. I should reach my peak performance just in time - keeping everything crossed!!!
Cystic Fibrosis is a chronic life shortening disease that affects 10,000 children and young adults in the UK. It affects the lungs and digestive system. Current average life expectancy is in the 30's and there is no cure.
Patients have to take hundreds of tablets every week, many need IV treatment, daily physiotherapy, constant hospital visits to help keep the lungs from deteriorating. In some cases a lung transplant is the only option. Despite the excellent care of NHS professionals these hospital stays are tough both on the young and adult patients but also the wider family.
Cystic Fibrosis Care has been established by families with a close affinity to CF. We aim to provide CF sufferers and their families with essential equipment to make their time in and out of hospital more bearable. CF Care grants provide vital medical and physio equipment for specialist wards, buying portable nebulisers, humidifiers and spirometers, so treatment of young patients can happen at their homes rather than in hospital, reducing travel time and stress that in-patient care can bring. We offer hardship support to help those families who find prolonged hospital stays with their children to be financially challenging - this might involve hotel provision, respite care or even holiday breaks. CF Care also provide training grants for nurses to become Specialist CF nurses, therefore investing in care for the future.
We want to make life a little better for those with CF providing extra care and support. Any donation that you could give would be gratefully received.
