Story
Dear Friends,
I’m doing it again and this time it’s in South Africa!!
After the sweltering heat, the inedible tofu, the ubiquitous rice, the indestructible cockroaches and long distances of last year's ride in Asia, it is frankly amazing that I have volunteered for more of the same punishment!! This year's ride takes us through the lush and mountainous terrain of the , so all I have to contend with are poisonous snakes, killer spiders, man-eating wild animals and mountains that wouldn't be out of place in the Tour de France.
Though we’ll be covering a little less distance than last year, the terrain is much more demanding. We have to cycle between 50 to 100 km per day for six consecutive days as we make our way through the mountains, to finish in .
My training regime has begun and every free evening and weekend is being spent at the gym or in the saddle (on my bike!). As you can see from my picture, the roads of and the Home Counties will be a safer place in my absence, though whether I'll be safer on the South African roads is anyone's guess!
I have already paid for the flights and expenses (as has everyone taking part) so please do not think you are funding or subsidising me in any way for this. All sponsorship goes directly to the charity itself. is a charity specialising in helping children cope with learning disabilities and social disadvantages. As usual, some of the children and beneficiaries of the charity are making the journey with us!
Donating through this site is simple, fast and totally secure. It is also the most efficient way to sponsor me: will receive your money faster and, if you are a taxpayer, an extra 28% in tax will be added to your gift at no cost to you.
Thank you for helping me to help others in this project!
Paul.
