Story

Thanks for visiting my JustGiving page.

As a Cardiff Obstetrician I am fully aware of the difficulties mothers face in developing countries particularly Africa:-

Every day, approximately 800 women die from preventable causes related to pregnancy and childbirth, 99% in the developing world.

A woman’s risk of dying from treatable or preventable complications of pregnancy and childbirth over the course of her lifetime is 1 in 6 (in developed regions, the risk is 1 in7,300)

Skilled care before, during and after childbirth can save the lives of women and newborn babies. Since 2005 volunteers from Welsh Hospitals have provided training to frontline staff in Benin, Ethiopia, Togo and Liberia and surprisingly a comparatively modest effort can have surprising results.

Moondust is a 40 ft yacht based in Dartmouth and my co-owner and I are delighted to have entered the Eddystone Charity Pursuit race (http://www.eddystonepursuit.com/) which provides an opportunity for me to combine my passion for sailing with fundraising for an excellent cause.  Competitors in the race are awarded a share of the £16500 charity prize fund.  Boats are awarded points based on how early they register (already done) how much money they raise and lastly how well they do in the race.  I hope to turn this into an annual event and am hoping to make a big dent in the prize fund so please be generous.

Racing yachts is an exciting challenge - what will the conditions and tides be on the day?  The shortest route to Eddystone may not be the fastest and tactics can influence race performance enormously.  Will we be reefed with a small headsail battling the waves, or teasing the most out of light winds on a calm sea?
