On 16th March 2010 I will be 70. As a way of celebrating this milestone in my life, I am walking the 85 miles of Hadrians Wall Path from Wallsend to Bowness between 29th April and 4th May 2010 with my son Simon. It is something we always said we would do and now seems an appropriate time to do it.
The reason behind this venture is twofold and I am supporting 2 charities.
Firstly, both my sons are serving officers in the Royal Air Force and have returned safely from service overseas in areas of conflict. A pledge on this site will go to 'Help for Heroes' honouring the men and women of our 3 Armed Services who have suffered and deserve the best!
Secondly I wish to say thank you for the recovery of my dear wife from Breast cancer which was diagnosed nearly 6 years ago. Support for the charity 'Breakthrough Breast Cancer' can be pledged on my other site.
So far I have pledged to me over £500 + Gift Aid, which includes donations via sponsorship forms as well as the 2 Just giving pages.
My training is going great and I am very confident that Simon and myself will have a good weekend. All accommodation is booked as well as trains up to Newcastle and back from Carlisle.
Thursday 29th April off to meet Simon in Newcastle for overnight stop before the start. Watch this site as there will be updates on progress.
Updates.
Thursday,29th April.
Set off from Leicester Railway Station feeling extremely nervous.More confident on meeting Simon.
Friday, 30th April.
Wearing their Just Giving teeshirts,Vulpis Argentium,(Silver Fox, Peter), Et Filius,(And Son,Simon),they walked 20 miles in 7hours.To their delight, there were 100’s of sand martins flying around a sand bank by the River Tyne.
Saturday,1st May.
In good spirits, completed the day’s schedule in record time, despite the rain. Were well looked after in the B&B.
Sunday,2nd May.
It was a cold start to the most challenging day.Reita passed on many messages of support from Church, friends and relatives.to encourage them. There was snow on the mountain tops as they climbed up and down the difficult terrain. At the end of the day, Peter was exhausted, however Simon was pleased with their achievement.
Monday,2nd May.
Bright and frosty day, refreshed and ready to continue. Quite a hard day with the first half consisting of more ups and downs followed by long field and road stretches. Good day though walking 18 miles in 7 hours.
Tuesday,3rd May.
Overcast day and quite cold as they set out on the last leg of 18 miles to Bowness on Solway. This took them through Carlisle along the River Eden and then into open country. By this time Peter was having trouble with a muscle strain above the left Knee and Simon had swollen Achilles tendons, so the final thrust along the sea bank to Bowness took time but the distance was completed in 7hours. Disappointingly there were no cheering crowds or banners to greet them just desterted village streets, where they were the first walkers to arrive on the day at 3.30pm. There was great comeradery in the village pub where all sign the visitors book whilst waiting for the 93 bus to Carlisle. Peter and Simon had a celebration Chinese meal in Carlisle.
Wednesday, 4th May.
Raining as Simon boarded the 0850hrs to Elgin heading home and Peter had a last look around the city before boarding the 1111hrs (20 mins late good old Virgin!) to Rugby, he made his connection at Birmingham and arrived to a welcome home by Reita at 15.15hrs
Thanks to all for the support and encouragement.
