BHF London to Brighton Night Ride 2014 · 12 July 2014 to 13 July 2014 ·

Far too many of us have felt the pain of losing someone we love. With your donations, we power groundbreaking cardiovascular research to save and improve lives, bring hope to families, and keep hearts beating across the UK.

Story

I did this ride last year and had the most exhilarating experience, leaving London at midnight and bombing through dark leafy lanes and on into the breaking dawn over the Sussex Downs as we neared the sea. It was sheer magic. I had never believed I could do it. But.....made it!

This year my sister Claire Schofield (see second photo)  persuaded me to do it again and flew all the way from Canada to check I was doing it properly and ride with me!  Claire had recently done a big charity ride of 100kms in Canada on June 1st, and was very fit so really helped me keep going. As if that wasn't enough my cousin Simon Galpine, who is positively feline on a bicycle came too to supervise.  Our group name was The Whizzers. We gathered near Tower Bridge and left London at 11.15pm then pedalled and pushed up hill and down dale all the way to Brighton, through wind rain and all sorts. 109kms! Rather tougher ride this year on our road bikes, but none the less both a demanding and satisfying challenge. Tears as the Finish Line came into view early the following morning. And the best English Breakfast ever afterwards. What a trip!

One word to everyone who so kindly donated, supported and encouraged?

THANK YOU!!!!!!! We made it!

Inspiration for the ride was losing a dear friend of the family who died of heart failure earlier this year. We also recently lost my mother-in-law aged 93 who actually had a very strong heart herself but left many broken hearts behind her. Our hearts are precious. They need gentle nurturing, exercise and above all love to keep well. For me that's what the ride is all about.
