Story

We believe that all young people should experience success in their learning.

Our Trustee Martin Halford and Hackney Pirates' teacher Anthony Mensah are taking on the challenge of running the Hackney Half Marathon. They will be raising much needed funds to support the growth of the Hackney Pirates' literacy programme. This will enable us to support even more children with their literacy, confidence and perseverance in Hackney and beyond!

Your Donation

Your donation will go towards supporting our exciting growth plans, enabling us to go from supporting 160 young people, to 800 in the next 3 years.

The Hackney Pirates : Our Impact and Approach

The Hackney Pirates is an a pre-emptive intervention for young people aged 9-13 who are both falling behind and have fewer opportunities.

On average, Young Pirates' reading ages increase 52% faster than age related expectations, meaning in 9 months real time, they make 14 months progress.

Our unique after-school learning programme provides young people  with extra adult attention, in a fun and supportive learning environment. The Young Pirates work on motivating reading and creative publishing projects such as books of stories & poetry, audio projects recorded in professional studios and films screened in local cinemas.

About the charity

The Literacy Pirates gives young people one-to-one attention in an unconventional learning environment to support them with their literacy, confidence and perseverance. Your support is central to our programme, and ensures we can work with as many young people as possible.
