Story
Since 1984, Rotary International kicked off a worldwide campaign to vaccinate as many people as possible around the world for Polio, starting in the Phillipines and spreading from there. A pretty ambitious project you might say, but when you’re an good Aussie, you seem to always bite off more than you can chew.
29 years later, Polio in the world has been whittled down to 3 countries with known cases of the disease. Impressive! But the fight isn’t over. We need a final push to get the job done for good. Pakistan, Afghanistan and Nigeria are still in trouble. And wouldn’t you know it, these are the toughest countries to get into and help people (mostly due to a small number of loonys running amok with guns and shooting at people). But Rotary International isn’t the kind of organisation to shy away from a challenge. And with recent valuable support from The Global Poverty Project, Unicef, world governments, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and a number of other large corporates, the fight is almost over.
Push for Polio is about doing our part. Sure, there’s a maniac on a scooter who needs to make it happen, but behind all that, it’s a community of people who believe in the cause. They believe enough to kick in some money that they won’t miss in order to help another human being less fortunate than they are.
And that pretty much sums it up.
