l'ascension des Pyrénées · 20 August 2009

We are a youth-driven organisation supporting a global movement of young people to take action. We exist to ignite youth-led action to create solutions to the world’s most urgent problems. We support young people by connecting them with the skills, networks, platforms and experiences to lead change.

Story

Our Challenege

In the middle of August , a team from Airbus will attempt to cycle from Biarritz to Toulouse.  To make it a little more challenging we will include a few small hills,  one or two of which have featured in the Tour de France.  We are doing this because we are a little crazy, (mad dogs and english men..... although we have snuck a frenchman into our midst to ensure a little ‘entente cordiale’ on the mountain side) but mainly to raise money for a worthy cause – Raleigh International

The details of our ride starting on the 20th August and finishing on the 25th August are as follows:

Total Distance:             332 Miles

Total Ascent:                7570 Metres

Total Descent:              6745 Metres

Above are a some pictograms hi-lighting some of the ups and downs we are likely to face

There are seven of us taking on the mountains and you may see a few pictures of us en route on this site if you have a look at this site during the event

All monies we raise will go direct to the charity and below you can read how any donations you make may be spent. I think you will agree that any donation will be appreciated and spent wisely

About Raleigh International

Raleigh is all about young people.  It is a well established educational charity that runs volunteering and challenging experiences for people from all backgrounds and nationalities.  Raleigh is committed to help people develop their skills, confidence and cultural awareness through sustainable community and environmental projects and adventure challenges.

·        Over 30,000 young people have accessed Raleigh expeditions over the past 25 years.  These young people have worked on 255 expeditions across 45 countries, from Chile to Mongolia, and Siberia to Botswana.  Today volunteers have the opportunity to work in Borneo, Costa Rica and Nicaragua and India.

·        Raleigh’s volunteers have assisted local people in some of the remotest areas of the world by working on environmental and community projects.  The latter includes constructing over 700 schools, building playgrounds, community centres and clinics.  The volunteers have worked on a range of projects from constructing bridges across canyons to installing gravity water feed systems which have provided rural villages with their first drops of fresh running water.

·        All of Raleigh’s projects are developed and delivered in partnership with  government ministries, NGO’s and local communities to ensure sustainable development.   These have involved establishing facilities that promote employment or vocational skills training and education or activities that promote alternative means of income generation which do not contribute to environmental degradation.

·        Over 80% of these young people have been involved in fundraising to pay for their own expedition.

·        It is widely acknowledged that Raleigh is a pioneering organisation that paved the way for international expeditions and was one of the first British charities to bring volunteers to developing countries to work on community and environmental projects, alongside young people from the local countries.

If you want to find out more about Raleigh then ask one of the team or have a look on the web.
