<p>I like supporting charities that work to help people reach a point where they can help themselves. Care International does exactly that, resulting in successes like in Ma'e's Story (below).</p>
<p>I'm pledging to walk 10000 steps a day for one week, something these women have to do all the time just to reach good supplies of water and firewood. I hope you'll support me by sponsoring some money!</p>
<p>And despite some suggestions, no I shan't be doing this in heels. I want to be supportive, not end up with broken ankles!</p>
<p><span style="text-decoration: underline;"><strong>Ma’e’s Story</strong></span></p>
<p>Like many women in rural Papua New Guinea, Ma’e used to get up at 5am to walk 6km just to get water. There were persistent and deadly outbreaks of water-borne diseases like typhoid and diarrhoea in her village. This changed when CARE provided a clean water supply to Ma’e and her village for the first time. Ma’e says, ‘We found it hard to get water. The water source was a long way away and we were drinking water from dirty sources. Since the CARE project we don’t have to go far for water. Now we have received the water supply and our village is changing’, Ma’e has more time to look after their family, and improve their diet and health by tending to her vegetable garden. She is also using her new found time to increase her family’s income so she can send her 13 year old daughter Joyce to school.</p>
