Story
Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.
Some 1.7 million people are said to be affected across southern Africa, with no electricity or running water in areas where homes have been swept away and roads destroyed by the floods. The cyclone with winds of 170km/hr and heavy rains hit the port city of Beira in Mozambique, where 90% of the land is now under water and communications are cut off.
Khalsa Aid had initiated water projects in Malawi and Zambia as 1 in 3 people in Malawi do not have access to clean water. As Cyclone Idai hit, the situation has worsened with some areas being completely inaccessible. Many affected are thought to be sheltering in temporary sites, while thousands of others are still stranded in floodwaters. All the reports suggest that the situation for emergency services there is extremely difficult; there is worry about disease spreading and there is concern about getting clean drinking water for the people affected.
I will be joining the Khalsa Aid team in Malawi initially and then in Mozambique to get drinking water, food and essential supplies to those affected. We will help in building temporary shelters and supporting families rebuild their lives. I will post regular updates on Twitter @rajwilkhu and this page.
Your support in the form of any amount would be incredible in helping us reach more people in Malawi and Mozambique who are affected.
