Hello Everyone
This is my JustGiving page raising money for my expedition with Operation Raleigh. Firstly, if you are looking to donate to my Help for Heroes page instead then do not fret, just click here: www.justgiving.com/heroes-cycle
Lets begin with a few things:
Whats it all about?
Raleigh is a UK-based educational development charity that aims to help people of all backgrounds and nationalities to discover their full potential.
This is primarily done through 4-10 week expeditions to Borneo Malaysia, Costa Rica & Nicaragua and India - (Where I'm going)
The expeditions themselves generally comprise three parts (Adventure, Environment and Community), each lasting about three weeks.
Projects are planned with local partners allowing participants to get involved with rural communities and habitats.
Raleigh is a member of The National Council for Voluntary Youth Services (NCVYS)
Why?
Because a GAP Year isn't just for lazing about before Uni.
I know that a productive use of my time would be to help others less fortunate than ourselves. Why not spend some time helping to build a school, create functioning irrigation and sanitation services, protect the local habitat and wildlife, and of course, drag yourself up India's second highest mountain outside the Himalayas? Sounds good to me.
Primarily, this is about helping people. Giving something back.
When?
1st March - 9 May
Now, onto the cycle ride itself:
Master Jamie Perriam and myself shall be cycling from home, Edinburgh, to Paris on a TANDEM. (Donations to Jamie go into our combined fundraising page for Help for Heroes: www.justgiving.com/heroes-cycle)
This will consist of 700 grueling miles through some of Great Britain's toughest B Roads! We are planning to do this over a 14 day period.
Now, wait I hear you say, 700 miles in 14 days! That doesn't sound too hard. Well, here's the catch. This is a charity cycle ride and so it has to be charitable in itself. We shall be using our ride through the country as a chance to give to others. We will be stopping off at suggested addresses and doing something charitable. Therefore:
-You provide the postcode
-You provide the task
-(Maybe make a small donation to either page)
-We plot this address into our route
-Cycle fast to get there
-Then we do whatever it is you have asked
What to do?
This can be anything, from cleaning out your old mum's garden shed, to stopping at an Old Peoples' home and making them all a cup of tea. Anything.
This gives you a role in the ride. Therefore, this is not our charitable cycle ride but instead it is everyones. Everyone is taking part in some form or another.
How Much Should I Give?
Why not give £1/mile?
Or just sponsor us to go to a certain address?
It's up to you.
Conclusion:
So, you've heard it all now. This is what we're doing. If you feel that you wish to donate then please do. You will not only be helping us on our adventure, but you will be helping many more. This is a chance for you to do something for someone else.
Send us where you want us to go!
P.S. Once again, this page is for donations just to me and my fundraising for Operation Raleigh. If you wish to donate to both Jamie and myself and to the Help for Heroes Charity, where we will be primarily raising money for the new rehabilitation centre that has just opened in Edinburgh for wounded soldiers from the conflict in Iraq and Afghanistan, then go to: www.justgiving.com/heroes-cycle
THANK YOU
Harry
