Story

Have you registered as an organ donor?

It takes two minutes at www.organdonation.nhs.uk. You can also call 0300 123 23 23 or text SAVE to 62323.

Similar initiatives exist outside the UK.

See the Ranju's birthday teampage linked below for details of my mother's fundraising for the Oxford Kidney Unit.

The story

There were about 23.6 million people already registered as potential organ donors with the NHS in the UK at the end of March 2017. Furthermore, each donor presents the opportunity for up to 9 organs to be transplanted. However, only 1384 people have received a transplant so far since the start of April 2017 and 6369 are on the official waiting list right now in mid-August, some of whom will unfortunately die waiting for that gift that never arrived. This is aside from those who were removed from the transplant list because of deteriorating health and ineligibility for transplant, many of whom died shortly afterwards. Whilst some other countries perform better on this front, the issue is global. This is a problem that needs to be solved for the sake of those currently on the waiting list as well as those who may need an organ transplant in future, including you and me.

The cause

Innovation is clearly required to optimise the organ supply chain for transplant. The Oxford Transplant Foundation exists to further the science and practice of transplantation. It continues to deliver ground breaking research and technology for the benefit of the wider global transplant community and ultimately the patients. Building on the medical research excellence of Oxford University and the unique practitioner perspective of the NHS that is combined in the Oxford Transplant Centre, the Foundation promotes the work that will hopefully one day solve the organ supply chain problem. Please help me to help the Oxford Transplant Foundation.

About the charity

The Oxford Transplant Foundation is an independent charity established to raise funds for the sole benefit of the Oxford Transplant Centre. The Foundation raises funds that are used to enhance the Centre's facilities and to promote research in transplantation. It is devoted to the dissemination of information about the latest medical developments and their implications for improving patient care. The Foundation provides opportunities for stakeholders of the Oxford Transplant Centre -- from patients, doctors, through to carers and scientists -- to work together in continuing to build the Centre's reputation as a world leader in transplantation.
