Story

Please join me this September 11th,  2021, in the RELAY4RECOVERY.  Location and time to be announced.

You can support by SIGNING UP A TEAM (contact me if you wish to do so) and/or DONATING! Join me (Sasha) throughout my Relay. Gather some friends and together you can run, walk, or bike beside me every step of the way; however many steps, whenever you want to join. I welcome you all in this journey and am happy to share this day with you. A little contribution cannot change the world, but it can change someone’s world!

All donations will go towards RYAN'S HOUSE to support with keeping 24/7 counselling services, more beds as well as more program availability.

On January 22, 2021, the Ryan’s House doors opened. The new facility (formally known as the Residential Withdrawal Management Stabilization and Transition Facility) will commonly be called ‘Ryan’s House’ in memory of Ryan Hicks who passed away from a fentanyl overdose in March 2015. This naming celebrates the personal commitment to the project of his mother Laurie Hicks.

With the support of her husband and two daughters, Hicks tirelessly advocates for the services needed to battle Sarnia-Lambton’s addiction crisis. She started with advocating for the fentanyl patch-for-patch exchange program, which is now law. Laurie is a member of Bluewater Health’s Withdrawal Management Advisory Committee, working to get the permanent 24-bed addictions centre approved. ‘Ryan’s House’ represents the culmination of years of her advocacy work.

A message from Ryan’s family:
“It is such an honour for our family to have this house named in memory of Ryan, and to know his story has been heard. It is very comforting that this incredible addition will provide another resource to those who are determined to overcome their addiction. This will hopefully prevent tragedies and increase recovery success stories, so other families will not go through the experience we have. It is a very emotional day for all of us,” said Hicks.

Being in recovery myself, I am deeply rooted to the disease and the process one must go through to get the help they need. For the still suffering, I pray; pray for their serenity, to accept the things they cannot change, courage to change the things they can, and wisdom to know the difference.

Now more than ever, your help is needed to fill the gap! Too often people are discharged from treatment and left to their own devices, which most often leads to ending up back on the street and/or deep into their addiction.

With Ryan’s House and the support of others there can be a safe place for those wanting to change the path of their lives; however, YOUR HELP IS NEEDED!
