This year Team Jess will be raising money for the Jessica Gower My Blue Heart fund in support of the Bone Cancer Research Trust (BCRT). We hope to have a great turnout this year and already have 14 people signed up to run which is fantastic. We're feeling really motivated and have started training already! After three weeks of boot camp training to kick start things after Christmas (for Shirley), we have both been doing the Couch to 5k app and are currently on Week 7 of 9! This means we are running 3 x 25 minute runs this week!
Perhaps our motivation comes from knowing that on the 8th of December this year it will be the 10th anniversary of when Jess died. 10 years feels like a huge milestone, yet in many ways it still feels like yesterday that we were all together. Last year, the major UK cancer research charities reduced their direct bone cancer research investment for the third year in a row to a mere £198,575. This is despite it having some of the most brutal treatment regimes, the poorest of outcomes and affecting children and young people. Following the cancellation and postponement of many high-profile events and fundraising due to Covid-19, BCRT are expecting a loss of income in excess of £680,000. Despite this, there is still another child, teenager or adult diagnosed with primary bone cancer every 10 minutes somewhere in the world.
