    Our fundraising pages 13

    • Laura-EttridgeLLHM18

      Hi everyone,

In March 2018 I will be running both the Reading and London Landmarks Half Marathon for Tommy's charity in memory of a beautiful little boy called Leo Phoenix. Leo was sadly born sleeping on 17.01.16 at 37 weeks gestation weighing 6lbs 4oz.

Tommy's fund research into miscarriage, stillbirth and premature birth, and provide pregnancy and health information to parents. One in four women lose a baby during pregnancy and birth- Tommy's are working hard to reduce these statistics through educating parents-to-be. Current campaigns include #SleepOnSide and #movementsmatter.

      https://www.tommys.org/pregnancy-information/sleep-side-pregnancy-campaign

As a midwife myself, I also see first hand the incredible bereavement support and advice that Tommy's offer to families that have experienced baby loss.

Leo has 2 amazing mummies, Jess and Natalie, that have worked incredibly hard to raise over £10,000 in memory of Leo and I would love to help them reach their next target.

Please donate what you can 😊

      A big thank you!

      Laura x

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

In January 2016, Leo Phoenix was stillborn at 37 weeks. He weighed 6lb 4oz, and was born on the 17 Janruary 2016 at 2:33am. His parents were Jessica and Natalie Clasby-Monk, both friends of mine from secondary school.

Their story raised my awareness of the surprising frequency in which families experience baby loss and I have watched in awe over the last 18 months as they have raised £1000's for several charities and they have inspired me to do my part.

Therefore, on the 25th March 2018, I will be running the London Landmarks Half marathon. Those of you who know me know that I have run the Southampton half marathon for the last three years and have gotten slower each time! Consequently, my goal is to train to beat my original time of 2:15.

Through #LeoForTommys we are aiming to raise £5000 for Tommys - the Baby Charity. We have a team running the London Landmarks Half Marathon in 2018, where Tommy's are the main charity partner. Please help our team members raise as much money as possible for such a fantastic charity.

In January 2016, Leo Phoenix was stillborn at 37 weeks. He weighed 6lb 4oz, and was born on the 17 Janruary 2016 at 2:33am.

His death was completly unexpected, and has since devastated us, his parents, and our families. He had a post-mortem and we discovered that his placenta was too small compared to his weight. As a result, he failed to maintain his growth potential and his growth slowed towards the end of his pregnancy. We didn't know this at the time, but we now know so much more about pregnancy and the various complications that can occur.

We soon discovered the charity, Tommys. They fund a number of research and maternity clinics throughout the country to help prevent miscarriage, stillbirth and premature birth. 10 babies a day are stillborn in the UK, and 1 in 4 pregnancies end in miscarriage. Tommy's are working so hard to improve these statistics, and prove daily that baby loss is not 'just one of those things' and can be prevented.

Dr Alexander Heazell works from the Tommy's Research Centre at the St Marys Hospital in Manchester and was able to review Leo's post mortem and help us understand more about why he died. He has continued to support us through two pregnancies - one that sadly ended in miscarriage at 6 weeks, and our third (due in July 2017).

We have been able to attend a specific Rainbow Clinic in Manchester for those going through Pregnancy After Loss and they have been able to scan the placenta and make sure that its size and structure are okay - this is something that most hospitals in the UK are unable to do.

Tommy's have also supported us through the Tommy's Midwives helpline, providing emotional support through the anxieties of pregnancy after loss. They have also helped us share Leo's story and break the silence around stillbirth and miscarraige. In March 2017, our blog 'The Legacy of Leo' was nominated for a Tommy's Mums Voice Awards, and we couldn't be prouder to help such an amazing charity raise more awareness, and fund critical research.

Please follow along and see what we are up to to help save babies lives.

Thank you - Leo's Mummies, Jess & Nat

I am supporting Leo's legacy because I would like to make a difference. I will be doing this as a part of my citizenship GCSE and in the process; I am trying to raise £500. I will be cycling from my home to Cambridge with my father. I will be using a Trek 1.0 bike and I hope to complete it in less than 8 hours.

Thank you very much for your support!

We discovered Aching Arms after our son Leo Phoenix was stillborn at 37 weeks in Jan 2016. Leo's auntie requested a bear, named Nora, to give us comfort. It has been such a help to know that are not alone and to also have something to hold and cuddle.

We then embarked on getting Aching Arms set up in our local hospital - the John Radcliffe in Oxford - so that families can receive a bear and the comfort that they bring straight away. Now we provide Aching Arms bears for two hospitals and are working to raise the equivalent amount of money to ensure that the charity can continue their much needed support.

A team will be running in the Oxford Half Marathon for Leo - who was stillborn in January 2016. The Legacy of Leo team are running to raise crucial funds for the prevention of stillbirths and neonatal deaths, and to support those affected by the loss of their babies.

SANDS provided Leo's parents with resources, information and a memory box when Leo was born. This gave them precious memories and keepsakes that they will cherish forever, including footprint, casts and photos. They also support parents following a loss, through local support groups and a national helpline.

SANDS are a leading charity in tackling stillbirth, focusing on research initiatives to combat the alarming statistic that 17 babies are stillborn or die shortly after birth each day, in the UK. With many other countries performing far better than the UK, there are a lot of initiatives working to reduce this number - with your support we can help.

Thank you so much for supporting and you can follow more about Leo's story on Facebook, at 'The Legacy of Leo' to see more about the fundraising efforts happening in his name.

Welcome to one of the many ways that we are working to create memories for Leo and send him on an adventure of the world!

Leo the Lion, is a trackable geocache in memory of our son, Leo Phoenix, who was born sleeping on 17th January 2016. Leo the Lion is one of many ways that we are remembering Leo and letting him to travel the world, and we need your help! If you find Leo the Lion, please look after him and move him on to a new location, ready for the next people to discover him!

We currently have the following Leo the Lions on an adventure

Leo the Lion - The First (TB7315F) started his adventure, at Leo's hometown, in Oxfordshire. Visit the Geocache website to follow him: http://goo.gl/eUy3eW

Leo the Lion - The Second: TBC - will start his adventure soon!

There are several elements to Leo the Lion's mission:

      1) Most importantly, we want Leo the Lion to travel far and wide, go on an amazing adventure, and hopefully discover some exotic places in the process

      2) We would love to create memories of Leo the Lions adventures for our son - if you find Leo the Lion, we would be very grateful if you could take a photo of him where you found him, or nearby, as a memento of his journey. Please share the photo using the hashtags #GeoForLeo and #GeocacheForLeo and feel free to tag @thelegacyofleo on Twitter or Instagram, or Like his page on Facebook "The Legacy Of Leo"

      3) We are working to raise money in aid of SANDS, The Stillbirth and Neonatal Death Chairty which supports bereaved families and is working to reduce stillbirths in the UK. Should you be touched by Leo's story we would be more than honoured for any donations on his specific #GeoForLeo fundraising page. If you donate, please tell us where you found Leo the Lion!

Sadly friends of ours little boy Leo hoenix was born at the John Radcliffe Hospital on the 17th Jan 2016, sleeping, at 37 weeks gestation. The care and facilities available to them at the John Radcliffe enabled them to be fully supported and to spend time with him, as a family, before saying goodbye.   The money we aim to raise will go towards helping the fun support families at such a difficult time.

The Ashfield fund is used to purchase equipment specific to supporting bereaved families, such as cold cots, photography equipment, materials to provide hand and foot casts and prints. Without this fund the care and support they recvieved would not have been possible.

Below are further details so you can know and understandwhere your generous donations  go and how it can help.

From the hospital: " The Ashfield Fund also ensures the bereavement suites are kept maintained by purchasing new soft furnishings and items to enhance the environment, such as pictures, accessories for the rooms, tea, coffee making facilities, fridge’s, televisions, etc.
We have recently improved the lighting in the Ashfield suite, replaced the ceiling and entrance doors and decorated. We are in the process of purchasing a new adjustable double bed and plan to modernise the bathroom next.

We are aiming to replace the sofa in the Lambert suite soon and redecorate, having just bought new curtains and duvet covers.

Our biggest project planned is to improve facilities on delivery suite for those women who need to be cared for in that area.

The fund is also invaluable to supporting staff training in bereavement , in areas such as bereavement photography, counselling and general caring for a bereaved family following their loss.

Our expenditure varies according to how much we have in the account. We have been fortunate to receive regular donations over the last couple of years so have been able to spend more on maintaining and enhancing the service.

      Some examples would be;

£800 for a photography study day for a group of staff
£90 for a supply of materials for providing hand and foot casts over a period of about 2 months
£120 to send one person on a bereavement study day

I estimate the cost of new soft furnishing for the Lambert suite to be in the region of £2000

We have yet to get a quote for improving the bathroom in the Ashfield suite, but could be in the region of £3000

We are also in the process of obtaining a quote for some major work on the delivery suite room, we have been advised this could be in the region of £40,000, some of which we hope will be funded by a grant, but we will need to use the Ashfield fund to furnish this room to create a homely feel"

Such a wonderful charity that has helped our friends and many others like them. Here is there story.

      Story

Our much fought for son, Leo Phoenix, was born sleeping on 17th January 2016 at 2:33am, weighing 6lb 4oz. We found out the news that he had passed away two days earlier, so we had a bit of time to prepare to finally meet our son.

Although tragic, this time has been bittersweet for us. We have been able to spend time with Leo, hold him, and create memories that will never be forgotten. With every person we have had to break this news to, we are increasingly humbled by everyone's kind words and actions, and to witness how much love Leo had waiting for him... this makes us the proudest of parents.

We would like to share the incredible work of the teams at the John Radcliffe Women's Centre. If ever there was an advert for a profession, the midwifes who have cared for us, Leo and our families are it. There are no words to adequately describe them.

They are supported by the Ashfield Fund and the SANDS charity. Without these two, they would not have been able to provide the level of care, support or memories that we have received. We only hope other families around the country are able to access this support and therefore wish to dedicate our futures to supporting them in many ways.

So many people are already doing things in Leo's name, and this means so much to us. We have created this page to keep track of everything and so we know the true value of Leo's legacy

Your story may be short Leo, but it's your story, and we will continue to write it for you. We are so very proud of you and your mummies will always love you, Leo Phoenix.

Our team of 11, 'The Legacy of Leo', is running in the 'Color Obstacle Rush' in Windsor on May 7th 2016 to raise vital funds for the Ashfield Fund at the John Radcliffe Hospital.

Leo Phoenix was born at the John Radcliffe Hospital on the 17th Jan 2016, sleeping, at 37 weeks gestation. The care and facilities available to us at the John Radcliffe enabled us to be fully supported and to spend time with Leo before we had to say our goodbyes, as a family. For this, we will be forever grateful.

The Fund contributes to a range of facilities for the Bereavement Team, such as:

£800 for a photography study day for a group of staff
£90 for a supply of materials for providing hand and foot casts over a period of about 2 months
£120 to send one person on a bereavement study day

The hospital is also working towards improving the bereavement suites, and the delivery suite facilities for such situations - these are large scale projects costing thousands.

Please help us raise crucial funds to ensure that this vital training, care and facilities can continue.

Natalie is running the Green Park 10km in Reading for the Ashfield Fund for the John Radcliffe Hospital, Oxford.

This fund has ensured that the Level 7 ward at the Women's Centre was able to provide us with one of two bereavement suites to spend a few days with Leo. We were so well looked after, and the staff cared for Leo so well. We were able to use a cold cot to have Leo with us as much as we wanted, and we were able to hold him, and spend time saying both our hellos and goodbyes.

Without the fund, as well as with additional support from SANDS, the ward would not have been able to provide the level of care, support or memories that we are so grateful for.

Please donate as much as you can to help them continue to support families during such tragedies.
