Thanks for taking the time to visit our JustGiving page.

Kirsty and I met Andi when we were living in Abu Dhabi in 2012.  She had only just moved to AD but already had a multitude of friends. It was easy to see why; out-going, gregarious and fun-loving, Andi was easy to warm to.

We had a fabulous time in AD together and shared many wonderful experiences.  Unfortunately in March 2013 Andi was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukaemia, an illness she faced with strength, determination and positivity.  Despite this and the best modern medicine could throw at her, Andi died on 15th June 2015.  She was 43. She left behind her husband Henry, and children Holly and Freddie.

The UCL Cancer Institute Research Trust undertakes a wealth of groundbreaking research with the aim of defeating cancer. In particular we will be generating money to fund a specific research program to identify the cause of AML and ultimately define the medicines and treatments to cure it.

Donating through JustGiving is simple, fast and totally secure. Your details are safe with JustGiving - they'll never sell them on or send unwanted emails. Once you donate, they'll send your money directly to the charity. So it's the most efficient way to donate - saving time and cutting costs for the charity.

Thanks for taking the time to visit this page in memory of James, who sadly passed on 10th March 2017 at UCLH hospital.

James (known as Jim), was born in Cavan in Ireland on 4 January 1948 where he lived with his family including his 2 x sisters and 6 brothers.  Jim moved to Luton in England when he was 19, where he met Ann his wife. They had two children Simon and Michelle and one Granddaughter Jessica.

Jim was a plasterer by trade, he was a man who like the simple things in life.  He loved his family, his dogs Sam and Jake and enjoyed nothing more than hooking the caravan up and going away on trips over the UK taking in the beautiful countryside on long walks with Ann and the dogs.

Jim was first diagnosed with AML in 1994 and with the help
of research and the care of all the doctors, nurses and staff at UCH was successfully treated after a long hard battle and remained in remission for 22 years until March 2016.

During his treatment, Jim became friends with Marc Mansour as one of his consultants and admired Marc and his team for their work in saving lives.  Without this work Jim would not have had the extra 22 years first time round.

This charity is very close to Jim, Ann and his families hearts and they would like as much money raised as possible to ensure that other families benefit from the research so that they too, may have as much time as possible with loved ones. 100% of the money donated will go directly towards a fund (the Andrea Firebrace Foundation) that is raising money to sponsor new research into AML.

Donating through JustGiving is simple, fast and totally secure. Your details are safe with JustGiving - they'll never sell them on or send unwanted emails. Once you donate, they'll send your money directly to the charity. So it's the most efficient way to donate - saving time and cutting costs for the charity.

Andrea's story and that of her incredibly brave family is one of great sadness. Having lost her courageous fight with acute myeloid leukemia on 25th June 2015 at the young age of 43, it inspired commitment in so many to help support Andrea and Henry's wish to prevent the same experience being repeated for other families.

In July I will be running the SwissAlpine Davos K78 Ultra Marathon (www.swissalpine.ch/en/races/swissapline-marathon/k78/), which, as the name suggests is a 78 km course across the Graubunden Alps, with a total vertical ascent of 2.7km. I hope that it will help raise valuable funds in memory of Andrea and support her family's determination to fund further research undertaken by UCL Cancer Institute Research Trust.

This page is a general overview of the Andrea Firebrace 'story'... with further details and info available at: https://www.facebook.com/AndreaFirebraceFoundation/

Andrea and I married in December 2008. We were blessed with two beautiful children over the ensuing few years. We lived & worked in West London in the UK. In 2012 we embarked on a new adventure and moved to Abu Dhabi in the UAE. We met an amazing group of mates and made new roots as a family. Life was good.

Then on 19 March 2014 our lives were turned upside down when Andi was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukaemia (with monosomy 7, complex cytogenetics and FLT-3 ITD positivity - for the scientists out there!). The next 15 months - as it turned out - saw Andi endure several rounds of chemotherapy, countless infections of various severity and finally receive a stem cell transplant in December 2014. This proved all too briefly successful and Andi's courageous battle against the odds came to an end when she died in hospital in Abu Dhabi on 15 June 2015.

As her husband, I want some level of positivity to come from Andi's death. I want our kids to know how amazing their mother was. I want to help prevent others from suffering like Andi and prevent other families from going through what Holly, Freddie and I have been through and face up to everyday. I want to help raise funds in the fight against leukaemia, so that others better placed than me, can try and identify why one person contracts leukaemia (specifically AML), and the next person doesn't...

I have chosen to partner with the UCH Cancer Fund so as to benefit from their support and expertise in the leukaemia fundraising field. In turn, the money raised will actually fund research that will be undertaken by the UCL Cancer Institute.

    1. They carry out vital research which will lead to new discoveries about leukaemia, as well as improved treatments for leukaemia patients.

    2. They offer a ringside seat in the fight against cancer.

    3. They maintain close relationships with their donors so that they can stay involved with the Institute and the research projects they have helped to fund.

To this end, I plan to keep any donor or interested person updated on  the research that is undertaken by the UCL Cancer Institute via the Andrea Firebrace Foundation website. Once the details of the first research project are identified I'll keep you all updated...

    Thanks for your support!

    Best wishes, Henry.

On 15th June 2015, Andi lost her long and courageous battle with acute myeloid leukaemia (AML), aged only 43, leaving Henry and their two young kids, Holly and Freddie. Her journey was deeply personal on many levels. As a haematologist specialising in acute leukaemia at UCLH, and a friend of Henry’s from way back in our rugby days, it was incredibly frustrating watching drug after drug fail for this devastating disease. Unfortunatley, this is a scenario we see in about a half of our young AML patients. While we can win some battles with the drugs we have, the war can only be won in the laboratory, and that is what drew me to research.    In order to develop new ways of treating AML, we first need to understand its biology much better i.e. what causes it in the first place, what makes it tick, what are its vulnerabilities? These are the sorts of questions we have been trying to address in my research laboratory in
    the UCL Cancer Institute https://www.ucl.ac.uk/cancer/research/department-haematology/leukaemia-biology-group

When Henry decided to create the Andrea Firebrace Foundation (http://www.andreafirebracefoundation.com), we  spent a good deal of time thinking of the most effective use of the money raised, one that would leave a real legacy. We thought about pieces of research equipment, or perhaps supporting a specific project, but ultimately we decided that sponsoring a PhD in AML would make the most impact. This has the potential to launch a scientist into a life-long career in AML biology. They in turn will train other scientists in this area, and Andi’s legacy goes on. Sponsoring PhDships do not come cheap, costing somewhere in the region of £150,000, so anything we can raise through this Sepentine Swim will go towards that ultimate target.

Thanks for taking the time to visit our JustGiving page.

Andrea Firebrace was vibrant, witty, fun and loyal. She was the centre of her husband and young family’s life, a much loved daughter and sister, and a treasured friend to countless. She died on the 15th of June 2015, aged 43, after a courageous battle against Acute Myeloid Leukaemia (AML).

Our team is taking on the challenge of the Royal Parks Half marathon in order to support the Andre Firebrace Foundation and raise money for the UCL Cancer Institute Research Trust, which undertakes a wealth of groundbreaking research with the aim of defeating cancer. The one lasting legacy of being an ex-pat are the friends you make, united by a common bond of being miles away from family & old friends.

You make friends quickly & this was no different when we met the Firebrace's, a generous and magnetic family who we quickly bonded with in our last couple of years in the Middle East. Whilst we had already left when Andi was fighting the mother of all fights against AML we were united in the cause by amazing friends and family who seemed to all be standing as one in support of Andi, Henry, Holly & Freddie.

Mark is a late addition to the team and although not an (ex) ex-pat with Chris and Piers, is happy to pitch in to support this great cause and a family of friends he is yet to meet.

Our bike ride on SUNDAY 31ST JULY 2016 is a way of showing our continued support to Henry & the kids and also providing a little extra money for the amazing work of the charity UCL Cancer Institute Research Trust.

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

Next week Andy and I will be heading up Kilimanjaro for an 8 day hike to (hopefully!) conquer the highest free standing mountain in the World. Last year an amazing lady, incredible mother and wife and wonderful friend passed away due to a very aggressive form of cancer. Please help the World conquer this horrible illness and donate to the UCL Cancer Research Trust in memory of the one and only Andi Firebrace.... We can guarantee our challenge is extremely insignificant in context of the challenges faced by cancer sufferers every day.... Thank you.
