Hello Everybody!
Thanks for taking the time to visit our JustGiving page.
We hope you will be able to support us in fundraising for Help for Heroes.
Anything...big or small...will be gratefully received. Every little really does help!
Also, a BIG THANK YOU to all those who have already donated (we have listed your names at the end of this message). With your support we are at last on the road to achieving our target of £3,000+ and helping servicemen wounded in Iraq and Afghanistan.
We have obtained the support of the Duke of Edinburgh, Captain General of the Royal Marines, who attended the premiere in 1955 of the film, The Cockleshell Heroes. Our challenge is to follow the route taken in December 1942 by a group of Royal Marines who later became known as the Cockleshell Heroes. Led by Major “Blondie” Hasler their mission, code-named Operation Frankton, was to paddle about 70 miles up the Gironde estuary to Bordeaux, to sink enemy shipping, and then to escape overland in the hope of returning to Britain.
Of the ten who set out, only two survived – Major Hasler and Corporal Bill Sparks. After succeeding in sinking blockade runners in Bordeaux, they paddled a further 25 miles downstream to Blaye and then walked 100 miles to Ruffec, where they met up with the French Resistance and eventually reached Spain and safety. We will undertake this project in July - August 2010 and follow the full route of Major Hasler and Corporal Sparks, by kayaking nearly 100 miles in a two-man folding kayak, and then walking and running 100 miles to Ruffec.
Our target is to raise at least £3,000, we hope more, and every penny that we raise will be paid to Help for Heroes.
Do please help.
