Friends of Autism Highland organise a wide range of events and activities for families affected by autism and also provide a means for parents to ask for advice and provide them with support and information through a closed Facebook page.

Story

Drs Akash Devendra, Philip Kiln and Paul McMullan along with Executive Manager Andy Grist of Riverside Medical Practice are running the Loch Ness Marathon on 27th September to celebrate the joining of Riverside and Foyers Medical Practices. As part of this massive effort of running 26.2 miles we would like to bring awareness and raise funds for a local charity in the Highlands, Friends of Autism Highland. This is a charity initially started as a small support group by mums with children suffering from autism. This has grown into a registered charity that brings support and organises event for families and children who are affected by autism.

Autism is a developmental disorder that can cause problems with social interaction, language skills and physical behaviour. People with autism may also be more sensitive to everyday sensory information. To people with the condition the world can appear chaotic with no clear boundaries, order or meaning.

Along with raising money, we are using this event to raise awareness of the 'Hello, my name is...' campaign. This was set up by a GP in England who has terminal cancer. During a stay in hospital for treatment, she observed that many of the care givers who attended to her did not introduce themselves to her. She set up this campaign to remind healthcare staff of the importance of introductions in delivering care. For more information please visit www.hellomynameis.org.uk
