HELP US REACH OUR TARGET & SPONSOR US PLEASE!
We are four fire fighters from Twickenham fire station and we're going to pedal from Lands End to John O'Groats. Our aim is to raise £15,000 for the Royal Marsden's Drug Development Unit (Oak Ward).
This is the Unit that was treating Matthew - Clive's brother.
The Oak Foundation Drug Development Unit is the only unit of its kind in the UK. It is a dedicated early clinical trials unit that focuses solely on the development of new drugs to treat Cancer.
The unit opened in 2004 enabling the team there to offer experimental therapies to patients who may have no standard treatment options left. What this means for the patients is that they have the opportunity to try new drugs which may control their disease and extend their life. It also means that drug trials can be conducted more speedily and efficiently ensuring that good drugs don’t take as long to get into the public domain.
There is a unique relationship at the unit between the Institute of Cancer Research, Charities such as Cancer Research UK and pharmaceutical trial sponsors, which ensures that there is a seamless link between discoveries at the laboratory bench and the patient bedside.
The philosophy of the unit is that they will advance Cancer medicine for the good of all and that the patients remain at the heart of everything they do.
The unit is an NHS service, however funding to support running the unit comes from charitable grants and self generated income. They are run by a team of dedicated Doctors and Nurses with extensive experience in Cancer Care who have chosen to specialise in this field.
The patients may also have other needs in terms of symptom control and emotional and practical support at what can be an extremely difficult time for them, and the Unit does a fantastic job of providing a holistic package of care for the patient both during and after their time on the trial.
Do please back us! We'll be setting off from Lands End on the 5th May and estimate it will take us ten tough days of cycling to reach John O'Groats.
We'll provide the sweat and tears - and no doubt someone will fall off - so maybe a little blood too!
However, your sponsorship will make it all worthwhile.
