This last few years have been incredibly challenging for the patients and their relatives as well as the staff of the Intensive Care Unit at University Hospital Wales, Cardiff. We have created a woodland called Roots of Hope by planting a tree to celebrate the life of every patient who lost their life to COVID and the community of staff who looked after the. We now want to expand the memorial woodland and plant more trees in memory of our lost colleagues and patients who have not been able to return to the embrace of their loved ones over the years. We hope that the woodland will provide a lasting memorial and space for reflection in their honour. We are also very mindful of the enormous environmental impact of the energy and plastics used in our work. Whilst we are working to reduce our carbon footprint and waste impact on the environment we want Roots of Hope to also be a symbol of hope for the future. As it grows and matures it will help to mitigate against the damage caused by climate change and  improve the climate for the sons, daughters, grandsons, granddaughters, nieces and nephews of those who have passed away and our surviving patients and their communities by offsetting our current carbon footprint.

To make this happen and to celebrate my 50th birthday myself and three friends planned on doing the Welsh Three Peaks Challenge only with a twist. To minimise the carbon footprint of the trip we were going to walk all the way from Pen y Fan in the south of Wales to Snowdon in the north of Wales via Cadair Idris. This would have been a trek of 158 miles over 11 days from September 5th 2021 camping along the way as we go. Unfortunately a training injury stopped this and an incident with an avalanche last summer led to postponements of the walk again.

From this September 8th I will be walking The Snowdonia Way. This is less miles but will still be 100-110 miles depending on route changes due to the weather and my legs being able to take on high level days rather than the low level days.It will take between 6 and 9 days again depending on route changes along the way. Thanks to those of you who left your donations when I couldn't complete the original route, now at least they will have been earned! Thank you to anyone who continues to donate also.
