Ironman France 2011 · 26 June 2011
Done it. I am now officially an Ironman. It wasn't easy though.
Despite my reservations about the swim I actually enjoyed it so thanks to my coach Mike Wake of Sevenoaks Tri club.
The cycle stage was beautiful but tortureous at the same time, cycling from sea level to ski resorts in temeratures well above 30 for over 8 hours.
As for the Marathon, it was daunting to start the run having never run that far before knowing that I didn't have the option of walking parts of it because I was short of time. But I dug deep and got on with it and crossed the finish line accompnied by my wife, Kaz, and my daughter, Jai, with2 minutes and 56 seconds left before the cut off time. (perhaps I could have walked a bit after all!)
So a massive thank you to all of those who have donated, many of whom I do not know personally which makes their donation even more generous. Also thanks to those of you who have donated off line, the money will be deposited with the cancer research shop in Sevenoaks.
Right, I'm off to put my feet up.
Cheers,
Rob.
Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.
I think it's fair to say we all know someone that has been affected by cancer in one way or another.
Perhaps it's my age but just recently it seems that I hear of more and more family, friends and colleagues who have suffered. Many of these people are relativly young, fit, and apparently otherwise healthy individuals. It could easily be one of us.
That's the morbid bit over.!
I am a weak swimmer, a poor cyclist and, at best, an average runner. So, to remedy this, I've entered an Ironman triathlon in France!
That's a 3.8Km sea swim, a 180Km cycle stage in the Alpes Maratimes followed by a 42 Km Marathon. How bad can it be?
I have until Sunday the 26th June 2011 to prepare.
At present I can swim only a couple of lengths without a rest, and I am recovering from an injury to my left knee which means I can't run for the time being and my cycling is limited to hours on an indoor trainer, I'm going stir crazy. Also, those who know me have, as politely as possible, pointed out that I am not 'of a conventional stature' for an Ironman!
Guys, with your support and the knowledge I am raising funds for this worthy cause I can't fail.
Donating to Cancer Reaserch through this site is simple and secure, it takes only a couple of minutes of your time and you even get to leave a message of encouragement (or abuse) on the web page. Please use the Gift Aid option if you are a tax payer and the charity can claim the tax on your donation
Once again, many thanks for your support.
Cheers, Rob.
