On Sunday 4 August I will aim to complete the Ironman UK which consists of a 2.4 Mile Lake Swim, 112 Mile Cycle and a 26.2 Mile run (visit http://www.ironmanuk.com/ironman-uk for more information). 

 

In preparation for this event for the past 30 weeks, I have been training in excess of 20 hours per week swimming, cycling, running and gym work. I can certainly say that the preparations for this endurance event have been a life changing experience.  I have given up drinking, nights out, neglected friends and family, and as one person put it, ‘’lived my life through a training spread sheet’’!

 

If you think this has been difficult, then I can honestly say it’s nothing compared to what many children face when diagnosed with cancer.  I am very fortunate and have had a fantastic healthy, active childhood.  However, unfortunately there are children who have not had this luxury that we take for granted. 

 

As a result of this I will be raising money for Candle Lighters which is a children’s cancer charity based in Yorkshire.  It was founded 40 years ago and is still run by parents of children who have had cancer (visit http://www.candlelighters.org.uk/ for more information). 

 

With fundraising and charitable donations, Candle Lighters are able to continue providing support, services and equipment to children living with cancer and their families.  Their aim is to make every day that bit more bearable, as well as funding the research which may one day bring a cure.
