Tour de Tortoise - Route des Grandes Alpes · 20 June 2006
From Thonon to Menton, the Route des Grandes Alpes covers 600 km of departmental roads and 68 km of national roads, including 16 passes above 1,500 metres (and 6 above 2,000m) and a cumulative elevation gain of 15,713 metres. It is open from June to 15 October.
The route crosses many famous cols including:
Col de l'Iseran (2,764m) – the summer time link between the two high Savoyard valleys, the Tarentaise and the Maurienne. This pass, created specially for tourists, is the highest in the Alps.
Col du Télégraphe (1,570 m) - from Saint-Michel-de-Maurienne, it is necessary to go over the Col du Télégraphe to reach the Col du Galibier.
Col du Galibier (2,677 m) – the mythic way-point of many bicycle races such as the Tour de France and the Critérium du Dauphiné Libéré, this marks the transition between the northern and southern Alps.
