London Marathon 2022 · 2 October 2022 ·
COVID UPDATE - On 23 April 2023, I'll be one of the 130 #TeamMND runners taking part in the Virgin Money London Marathon. The Motor Neurone Disease Association are hoping to raise much needed funds through this event - currently, a person's risk of developing motor neurone disease is around 1 in 300. The MNDA is the only national charity in England, Wales and Northern Ireland focused on improving access to care, research and campaigning for those people living with or affected by MND.
With MND, messages from the motor neurones gradually stop reaching the muscles, which causes the muscles to weaken, stiffen and waste. MND is a fatal, rapidly progressing disease and currently, there is no known cure. MND affects the brain and spinal cord, and can leave people locked in a failing body, unable to move, talk, swallow, and eventually, breathe. MND kills a third of people within a year, and more than half within two years of diagnosis.
I'm going to be running in memory of our hilariously entertaining and adored friend Alastair Dunwoody, who passed away from MND at age 36, and our gorgeously gregarious, talented and loving auntie, Berna McLean, who also passed away from MND at age 36 - two magnificent souls taken away from us all too soon.
I'm hoping to raise GBP 3,500 for the MNDA - as they say, every little helps and together we can hopefully make a difference and one day, find a cure.
