We fund research and offer support to beat the isolation of macular disease

Story

Macular Degeneration can affect anyone!

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page. A number of years ago I was diagnosed with Macular Degeneration. Here are a few facts about the disease, which can take many forms and has a variety of causes:

  • In 2015 Macular Disease affected 6.2 million people globally.
  • Macular disease is the biggest cause of sight loss in the UK.
  • There is currently no cure.
  • Treatment, when appropriate, involves monthly injections into one or both eyeballs!

I am one of the lucky ones. As of this writing only one eye is affected, and, after several years of injections in the affected eye, the disease has been arrested. However, my sight will never again  be normal and there is no guarantee that the deterioration will not return or that my other eye will not be affected.

Although I remain optimistic that I will continue to lead a normal life I want to take the opportunity now, to raise some money towards research into a cure and better treatments, and to provide much needed help for those who have not been as fortunate as I.

In 2019 I won a 'Good for Age' place in the London Marathon, and together we raised more than £7,000.00 to help find a cure for macular disease in its many forms.

Now I am delighted to announce that I have again been lucky enough to secure a 'Good for Age' for the 2020 London Marathon and on race day, April 26, I will be just six days shy of my 73nd birthday. But this year I am planning something a little more ambitious. I aim to run a '2020 Spring Marathon-A-Thon', completing three marathons in three months--March, April, and May--in three countries!

I operate a little blog on my website, www.run4eyes.com, and will be posting more details as and when my plans are firmed up, so please check in there from time to time so you can follow my progress. But one thing is for sure: the April race will be in London... the biggest marathon in the world!

During the 2020 campaign I am looking to raise £10,000.00 for the Macular Society... but I'll need YOUR help!

I know we are all constantly bombarded with requests to support various charities: children's charities, foreign aid, cancer in all its many forms, etc. All of these are excellent causes and I do my best to donate to fund-raisers on a regular basis. The Macular Society is perhaps not one of the better known charities, something of a Cinderella cause, you might say. But anyone--young or old--can be affected by macular disease, so let me ask you this:

  • Which would you prefer... to risk losing your sight and/or face the prospect of monthly injections in your eye(s)?
  • Or will you please consider making a donation to my London Marathon appeal?

Donating through JustGiving is simple, fast, and totally secure. Your details are safe with JustGiving--they'll never sell them on or send unwanted emails. Once you donate, they'll send your money directly to the Macular Society. So it's the most efficient way to donate--saving time and cutting costs for the charity.
