Story

Today (26th) i am coming to terms with the news that my father died on wednesday the 25th march 2009.  he died as far as i know from a sudden heart attack at his home whilst a friend was visiting him.  the ambulance and hospital crew tried but in vain, for 3 hours to save him.

my dad, VICTOR F. OSBORNE, had been on heart pills from the age of around 38 (was born in 1943/23/4) after a previous heart attack.  recently he had just gone through a painful hip replacement 2/3 weeks earlier whilst awake, with pain relief, as doctors feared problems with his heart if he was unconscious during the operation.  its thought at this stage that a possible blood clot due to this operation may of caused the attack.  heart problems run on my fathers side of the family, and this is why i had chosen this charity.  my thoughts are with you dad, i wish i could of been there in you last moments for you, love dougie.

by Deborah Gosden, daughter of Victor Osborne~5/4/09                       Hi, recieving the news out of the blue that your father has died of heart failure is the worst pain that can be felt in my experience when you dont expect it,  when they are so happy the week before making all sorts of plans . my brother dougie chose heart foundation for his charity this year, maybe someone was telling him something we didnt know.  Its to late to save our dad but please dig deep to help other people with this condition so they can live a longer healthier life  .

DAD WE WILL ALWAYS LOVE YOU ,YOU WONT BE ALONE WE WILL ALWAYS BE WITH YOU~ LOVE DEBBIE AND DOUGIE XXXX

WELL THIS YEAR TO KEEP ME BUSY I'LL BE RUNNING A WARM UP                HALF MARATHON  EARLY  5th APRIL paddock wood.  I'M IN THE LONDON MARATHON IN LATE APRIL , AND TRYING TO GAIN A PLACE IN THE LONDON TO BRIGHTON BIKE RIDE IN JUNE.  AFTER THAT I SHALL BE SWIMMING LAKE WINDERMERE ONCE MORE IN JULY~AUGUST TRYING TO IMPROVE MY FINISHING TIME OF THE LAST 2 YEARS. ALSO PERHAPS SOMETHING ELSE TOWARDS THE END OF THE YEAR TO KEEP ME TICKING OVER.  I'D LOVE TO HAVE A GO AT SWIMMING THE CHANNEL TO FRANCE AND BACK AT SOME STAGE BUT THAT WILL COST ME A MINIMUM OF £4 K JUST FOR THE SUPPORT BOAT, BUT NEVER SAY NEVER.

22/1/09  AT THE MOMENT I'VE BEEN SWIMMING PRETTY REGULARY DOING 1 AND A HALF MILES MINIMUM PER SESSION, AND  A 4 MILE SWIM ONCE A WEEK USING 4 SWIM STROKES  (medley's= butterfly, backstroke, breast stroke and finally front crawl) TO SAVE FROM BOREDOM.   ANYONE INTERESTED IN A COPY OF SOME SWIM SHEETS TO HAVE A WORK OUT CAN CONTACT ME ON dougiewins@hotmail.com . MY LONGEST RUNS THIS YEAR ARE ONLY 7 MILES SO FAR, SO I'LL HAVE TO UP THE ANTI ON THAT FRONT.  I'VE STILL GOT THE CHANNEL SWIM PUPPY FAT, AND THAT IT SEEMS IS HERE TO STAY, I LOVE MY GRUB !  ANYWAY LETS SEE HOW I FARE DURING THE NEXT FEW MONTHS. MY WEIGHT NOW IS APPROX ~ STEADY AT 14ST 6LB.

CONGRATULATIONS WEMBLEY PARK TRAIN DRIVER TOM WILSON 1ST ON THE BOARD !  ONLY £990 TO GO

I'VE HAD AN OFFER  OF A CHAPERONE ON THE LONDON BIKE RIDE WITH A SWIMMING COLLEAGUE, SO THAT MAKES THINGS A BIT BETTER ON THE JOURNEY.  HOPE HE CAN FIX PUNCTURES?   JUST GOT TO ROLL OUT THE BIKE NOW, WHERE'S THAT WD 40?

29th/01/09 wore myself down yesterday, i started in the morning with a 4 mile swim with plenty of varity in the strokes used, then popped upstairs into the gym and run for 3.5 miles.  i fitted in a bit of grub and done some chores, then off later with the kids to the wed's swim club for another 1~1/2 mile swim.

1st feb 2009  steve connoly's donation of  £10 is most welcome, but surely steve i'm going to find it tough enough in a half marathon, followed 3 weeks later by london marathon then the london to brighton biking and a cold lake windermere 10 half mile swim, based at a cold camping site where the showers and toilets are clean, but everything is smelling of the local dyke water.   ok it's true i'm toying with the idea of ~ swimming the length of windermere, cycling back and then running the final length which would be a total of 31 and half miles or more, taking  approx 6hrs 30mins odd for the swim if i'ved improved enough then perhaps 10 miles @ around 10mph taking 1hr 40/50mins then cycling back which would be a guestimate of 50 mins odd depending on whats in the tank by then, so a total of around 8hrs 30mins which is the longest shift at your place of work~~ and when was the last time you got caught for that shift?  i rest my case !

14th feb with several training sessions done now over the last few weeks, i'm starting to increase the mini triathlons i'm doing at the sports complex (crook log, bexleyheath). with swims ranging from 2 to 4 miles then straight upstairs for the bike of 9.3miles(club limit) then a run of between 3 and 6 miles to finish. it starting to come together slowly but surely, my knee seems fine now with my longest road run to date this year at 8 miles.  its a case of working up to it, this next week will see me pass into the 10mile+ area on the road after a swim and bike session.  i'll let you know how i get on with that.  anyone who fancies a bike day out let me know and we'll see where we end up? maybe catch a train out to somewhere, for some scenery rides.

5th april 2009 i've just finished the Paddock Wood half marathon today (13.1 miles) it was a warm sunny affair, it took us down country lanes twisting and turning past old farm yards and quaint old village public house's.  it was very pleasant and a change from exhaust filled roads and dual carriage ways.  with horses and chickens and many farm animal noises greeting us in different locations.  it wasn't to packed and there was space to run after the first 1mile aplenty.  i hadn't done much as far as training goes over the last 2 weeks, for one reason or another the motivation was drained from me.  usually i can give myself adrenalin rushes to energise my muscles, also i have got used to using an i-pod with high tempo music to increase running times.  because part of the course was shared with cars, i took the advice not to wear the i-pod.   i clocked 2hrs 30 sec's according to the course recording kit.  i really wanted to get under the 2hr mark, but that now means i know it's within my grasp.  no distractions and a better build up should get me under the time.  the water stations supplied water in small plastic cups, i blame this for slowing me down by at least 31 seconds.  if you tried to run and drink it just went all over your face and body, or down the wrong hole.  i curse not using my own belt and bottle as i usually do.   i got to find out about another half bloody marathon now, preferably within the next two weeks.

9th april 09 today i'll be passing on the cheques i have recieved for this charity on the 7th april.  thanks go out to                                         MRS J T TUTT.         DR D S FERNANDO.                    MRS D R COLE.                   MR B S AHDAN        MR/S GEORGE OSBORNE.                         ALISON RUTHERFORD.       MRS H J SHERWOOD.  MR BRIAN WICKES.                       THEY TOTAL= £195

10TH APRIL/09 AFTER LAST SUNDAYS HALF MARATHON I HAD A CASUAL 1HR SWIM, 5 MILE BIKE AND THEN A SHORT 2 MILE RUN ON THE MONDAY TO SHAKE OFF ANY ACHEING MUSCLES.                                   IT WAS HARD TO MOTIVATE WITH THE FUNERAL DUE ON THE TUES COMING.   THANKS TO MIKE AND BARBARA (CLOSE FRIENDS OF MY DAD AND JOAN) WHO HAVE HELPED  IMMENSELY WITH ALL THE PAPER WORK, AND FUNERAL ARRANGEMENTS FROM START TO FINISH, IT ALL WENT EXTREEMELY WELL.  THANKS ALSO TO THE FREEMASON LODGE IN FRIMLEY THAT HELPED WITH MANY OTHER AREAS ALSO.   AT LEAST 200 IF NOT MORE PEOPLE ATTENDED.  ps, many thanks to Graham for his talk about my fathers life at the funeral.   I'VE TRIED TO CARRY ON AS NORMAL AS POSSIBLE, 3 YOUNG KIDS ON HALF TERM LEAVE HAVE KEPT ME BUSY MOSTLY, DECORATING MY SON'S (5YR OLD) BEDROOM WITH FOOTBALL WALLPAPER BEFORE HE GOT BACK FROM A 'FOOTBALL IN THE COMMUNITY TRAINING SESSION'  OF HIS CHOICE,  THAT  GAVE ME GREAT JOY WHEN HIS FACE LIT UP LOOKING OUT OF HIS WINDOW AT ME DOWN ON THE DRIVE.  THATS THE SORT OF SUPRISING THING MY DAD WOULD DO ON A WHIM TO GET A SMILE ON SOMEONE'S FACE.  ANYWAY SOME MORE SWIMMING ON WED'S AND A 10 MILE RUN TODAY WITH PLENTY OF HILLY TERRAIN HELPED ME ALONG.  IF I CAN JUST KEEP AWAY FROM THE EASTER EGG'S  NOW I SHOULD BE OK FOR THE LONDON MARATHON.  MOTIVATION AND PREPARATION.      PMA PROPER MENTAL ATTITUDE AND A TRAIN TICKET TO THE START LINE

13th april yesterday (saturday) my neighbour wayne got me up early~ish and we trotted off for a run.  from our street in belvedere we headed to a very steep hill (new road), we laboured up and cracked on. once at the top we headed towards Danson park and done a circumference trot around it.  it was overcast and warm but the rain was holding back.  wayne was talking rubbish all the way, but he is a millwall supporterso it's to be expected.  we ended up doing 9 miles according to the Nike + chips in our trainers.  anyway today was another day for exercise, people call me for help this time my friend's son (steve dilley) and i end up doing more.  with an early swim at crook log then on the stationery bike and a light run to wind down that was me done for today. next off to my sisters for dinner and out came the the afters ~ i'm such a sucker~ after my wife and daughter fighting me off the kids easter eggs late last night, i got stuck into strawberry cheese cake and cream, then a hearty bowl of custard it was lovely i lapped it up.   spose it's back to the drawing board tomorrow morning....

20th april my contact Joanne, at british heart foundation tells me so far that £765 in cheques have reached them so far regards my dads funeral day, and his friends posting cheques to them in the specially prepared envelopes. some i have handed to her personally and the rest are filtering in through the post.  that handed me cash your monies and names are on the online list below.

well my works football team have won our division with a win last thurs that makes us our division champs. i may just bow out now and ref in both divisions next season like the 2 previous whilst i was injured.  i enjoy the reffing quite a bit now, takes a bit of getting used to but once you learn how to react to different charactors it becomes much easier.  also the guy who chose to insult me last thurs will get a shock when he realises i will be reffing his games next season, big mistake buddie, i can see a yellow or red mist comimg over  what would you do?

with some swimming done and light jogging this week leading up to this sundays marathon in mind, i think i can afford some munchies to burn off on sunday.   milk chocolate biscuits delicately dipped in hot tea and placed upside down on the tongue so the melted chocolate can show its full flavour, yes thats me and no guilt haha this week, with 3,000 calories on an average marathon burned.

6th may 09 i thought i'd just wright a report on the london marathon at last.  its been a week and a half since i finished the london marathon, i never really prepared myself well for the 26.2 miles, things kept cropping up to distract me.  i also favoured swimming more over as i got hooked on it since i learned to swim in earnest after watching a tutorial (total immersion.net).  the benefits for my lung capacity and whole body strength and endurance have turned corners through this discipline.  the longest run leading up to the L/marathon i did was only 13 miles long, and i was glad to see the finish line believe me, that was on sunday 5th of april swimming during the week and bike then run a 10 miler on the following friday with an early morning 9 miler on the saturday.  i was at the blue start near blackheath stn,. travelling alone to the start i had time to check my kit and think how i would tackle the hard times in the later stages of the run.  i committed a cardinal sin of wearing brand new trainers for the day.  i'll be totally honest and admit i was struggling to pay for them in the previous months and they didn't come high on the scale of must needs up until the last week.  i ran the half marathon on the 5th and realised that i needed to invest for the 26th.  i couldn't find the size and trainer i wanted anywhere anyway until i gave into the fact i would have to switch to another type.  i went for the nike verona and was promised that they didn't need breaking in.  i wore them all sat afternoon to hopefully get my foot shape settled into them.  as i approached the start area, the crowds of people sent a rush through me, i got very emotional thinking about my father for the first time since he passed away 4 weeks previous.  i just about held it together.  i slung my spare top away and slipped into the long que of runners waiting for the off.  finally the crowd of runners started to move forward.  ten minutes into the run start time i actually crossed the start line.  i pressed the play button on my i-pod and start on my watch.  my plan was to at least enjoy the first 13 miles and take it from there.  2 miles into the run i could feel a hot sensation on my soles, it was the new trainers letting me know i could of mad a big mistake here, my right lace seemed  to tight around this point also and my middle toes felt of pins and needles.  i persurveared with it though thinking that it would all settle as soon as the lasses stretched and the trainers learned my foot pattern.  i had put vaseline on my feet as usual and then the socks on and more vaseline on the sole of the sock as usual to prevent blisters.  everything was going well and the first part of the route felt very comfortable as i know it so well.  i got botlled necked  a few times behind people but wasn't to worried, as it sometimes helps to steady your pace for a while.  as i crossed tower bridge i felt much better than last year at this point, i had been caught in hail stones then, and rain and sun, causeing my hands and all to swell up, lots of people cramped and stopped short last year, i had completed the first half in 2hrs 3 mins.  i really wasn't looking forward to the isle of dogs part of the run, it seems to just go on forever, twisting and turning like a maze.  when you eventually get past all that area, you run back past the way you've been on the opposite side of the road heading towards tower bridge once more. i felt sorry for those still heading into the I/dogs looking over at us in envy.  around the 17 mile mark i was feeling it all start to take its toll on my mind, stop here walk a bit (no) you've done your bit (not stopping,no) but your legs have had enough (its harder to walk the last bit, and quicker if i just get on with it, no).  c'mon have a little walk then?  my brain just needed to talk to my alternative energy and ask for help, ''fat supplies do your thing''.  thats when doubts kick in, when you start to need alternative energy supplies.  sooner you get past that the better, as long as you don't give in to walking you'll get through it and find a new zone.  sue (my wife) and kids/mum sister and all would be waiting along the Embankment area between waterloo and westminister bridge, ready to cheer me on, it spurred me on.  the crowd and groups of british heart foundation supporters along the route had given me a boost in strategic points up until then.  i looked left and right anctious to spot them...it never happened, they all wore red tea shirts and had banners so where were they?  i felt a bit deflated not to have seen them, i wanted to see my kids and give a quick kiss.  i had passed the Embankment now, i had had just spent the last 10 minutes twisting left and right looking for them and continued doing this as i headed through parliament sq.  no sight of them at all .  a board came up and someone shouted 800 mtrs to go!  i always hated the 800mtr race at school, it seemed a bloody long way when i was young, it always seemed to be sports day on a hot sunny day.  i actually hate the sign 800mtrs..i really do.  i rounded the last bend on bird cage walk, my nike plus chip had already told me i had run 26.2 miles 300 yrds back or so.  its because you don't run on the blue marked perfect lines, the shortest route!  i crossed the line jubilent anyway, and got my chip cut out of my lases.  i checked my mobile and headed to the after party point where my family were waiting.  jamie my 5 year old spotted me and sprinted up grabbed me and said dad you got a big medal, i knew you would win!  ahhhhh bless him.  we had some picture taken together and headed in to refresh and with the other british heart runners.  i enjoyed the run after all, i thought i would struggle to finish this time.  maybe, just maybe i could win it next year. what do you think????

my next run may be 27th sep 'run to the beat' half marathon in greenwich. IF NOT BEFORE  my web link for that will be www.justgiving.com/jellysplash   in aid of the RNLI
