Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit our JustGiving page in memory of Lucy, Katherine and Matthew

On July 12th 1996, family and friends lives were destroyed and changed forever. We lost three amazing teenagers to a very careless driver and little did he care that two families had lost their beloved children. The three victims were Lucy Cook age 16, Katherine Baines age 17 and Matthew Baines age 14. A family lost both their children in one accident. The traumatic news spread across Hertfordshire, leaving everyone numb with shock and upset. Their funeral was huge, with over 500 people attending the service of the three teenagers, to celebrate their very short life.

With the latest news and statistics on teenagers aged between 17-19 being killed in car accidents, we thought it was even more apparent to honour Lucy, Katherine and Matthew by raising money for "Brake" and building awareness of how we can reduce the number of accidents in the UK.

They were and still are my best friends and I miss them every day. Lucy's sister Sally still remembers and feels the pain her family went through losing Lucy. In her words, "a fatal accident is even more of a shock because you never got to say goodbye properly and say all the things you wanted too. It's sudden and terribly hard to come to terms with. Something you will never forget for forgive".

To mark their 20 year anniversary next year, Sally and I are going to run Virgin London Marathon 2016, with the aim of raising £3000. Brake are not a chosen VLM charity and places are expensive for small charities. With our efforts and fund raising events we believe we can reach our target, but would really appreciate your support. Watford Observer have agreed to publish our story and build awareness.
