Story

Thank you for taking the time to read our fundraising page.

I am Jack Farren – Managing Director at Rural Inclusion CIC,
and we are raising funds for a community project in Uganda that we will begin in October alongside a local project partner. Any donations will be used to support the most underprivileged section of the community to access effective healthcare.

On the 4th October, I will be starting a 9 day hike of Kilimanjaro in Tanzania. Kilimanjaro is the tallest mountain in Africa
and the largest free standing mountain in the world.

The costs of the climb are personally funded and 100% of
donations will be going to the cause.

Who is Joy for Humanity?

Joy for Humanity is a charitable organisation which provides education and empowers Ugandan families to break the cycle of generational poverty to meet their basic needs such as shelter, healthcare, food, clothing, and education to live healthy and dignified lives.

Who is Rural Inclusion CIC?

Rural Inclusion is a social enterprise based in the United
Kingdom, who work with NGO’s and financial institutions to promote financial inclusion in rural communities, through access to education and finance.

Project in Lwengo

Joy For Humanity have partnered with Rural Inclusion to design a community based health saving scheme in the district of Lwengo, Uganda.

It is estimated that 100 million people are pushed into poverty and 150 million suffer financial catastrophe due to out-of-pocket
expenses for medical care.

Why are we addressing health financing in Lwengo?

  • The Ugandan Government health budget for Lwengo is £800,000, which equates to £3 per person per year.
  • There is no dentist for the whole district, private or Government.
  • One in eight children in the district will not celebrate their fifth birthday.
  • Lwengo has no proper operational maternity delivery suite
  • There is no laboratory in Lwengo.

In October 2021, the first stage of construction in a state-of-the-art health centre in Lwengo will be completed. The centre will contain a maternity ward, dental suite, inpatient wards, a laboratory and general medical services. The project has been led by Joy for Humanity (pictures below).

The project is to design a community saving solution will provide affordable and accessible healthcare for the people in Lwengo.

The main goal of the scheme is to reduce catastrophic expenditure and allow members to plan over an extended period of time to reduce the impact of a downturn in medical health. This is a step towards financial inclusion in an informal manner.

As part of the scheme, we will work with community leaders to establish four tiers, dependent on income level, for groups to join the programme.

Our mission is to not leave anyone behind in the community. The money raised will be used to establish a bursary fund to enrol the most underprivileged section of the community onto the scheme, in order for their families to receive quality medical care.

We will be providing regular updates on Jack’s training for
Kilimanjaro leading up to October, and we will establish a mailing list which will contain updates of the project and how donations are used to provide access to healthcare for our beneficiaries.
