Story

Every Day in May started because of my Mum. She died from ovarian cancer 34 years ago when she was relatively young, and I was 17. We watched her suffer in silence, going from treatment to treatment, including treatment at Guys and St Thomas hospital as well as The Royal Marsden in London, and other hospitals too. She was brave, you wouldn't particularly have known what she was facing, but I spent closer times with her and saw her suffer - physically and emotionally. She was leaving behind all us children, who she'd brought up single-handed after being widowed 17 years before, and losing a life not yet fully lived on this beautiful planet. We lost our lovely mum, our children lost or never saw their grandmother and the world lost an intelligent, warm and inspiring person. This heart-wrenching stuff is happening every minute of every day. Cancer will surely affect you at some stage, sadly I can almost guarantee that it will touch your life in some way if it hasn't already.

It's fine getting treatment for the physical side of cancer but the emotional side of the disease is harrowing and there is scant support for this 'softer' side of cancer care. That's why fitnaturally chooses to support Dimbleby Cancer Care, who are based at Guys and St Thomas Hospital in London. Dimbleby Cancer Care has a centre at the hospital, where people with cancer can get advice and support practical and emotional. Centres such as this provide such an important service and we are honoured to be able to raise money not for a huge charity with big offices and lots of staff but for this small effective charity who do so much direct good on the ground.
