I think I best start with a brief introduction, just in case my story goes global and people I don't know sponsor me (thanks, by the way, and yes I know it's unlikely).
My name is Sam, I am 23 years old, and I am a secretary for a Mental Health Team.
I first heard about the Memory Walk at work - I couldn't think of many reasons not to take part, its a short (ish) walk in a beautiful part of Cheshire, and I'll be listening to (moderately) loud music on my ipod. Doesn't sound bad eh!? (click "read more")
I know both personally and from experiences at work how much the Alzheimer's Society do, not just for those suffering from dementia, but the carers and families also affected.
Some facts for you from the Alzheimer's Society:
* There are around 750,000 people in the UK suffering from a form of dementia (and this number isn't going down).
* Dementia can affect men and women.
* You don't have to be "old" to suffer from dementia, many people under 65 are diagnosed with a form of dementia, and some forms affect young people.
Of course dementia can be extremely distressing and debilitating. People suffering from dementia need carers, and the support of their family and friends. This can be extremely stressful, and many carers will not know what they are entitled to, or know how to get help if they need it. This is where the Alzheimer's Society can help. I believe it to be priceless and irreplaceable.
If you do want to know more - go to http://www.alzheimers.org.uk.
So that's why I want to raise money for them, that's where you come in. Yes, you. If you could give, anything, whether it be a penny or a pound, a fiver or a tenner, it will be a penny/pound/fiver/tenner more than we had before.
If you can donate anything... THANK YOU!! I appreciate your support so much, and I'm sure the Alzheimer's Society would echo that too.
Wish me happy walking!!!
Love,
Sam xxxxxx
