We provide family-based care for children to ensure every child has a loving family

Story

Thank you for visiting my page!

A little about who I'm running for and why...

Hope and Homes for Children is a registered charity working in Central and Eastern Europe and Africa. Their mission is to give hope to the poorest children in the world and their vision is a world where every child feels loved.

I'm running the Edinburgh half-marathon to raise money for their special 'Project Ubuntu.' Can you imagine growing up not knowing what family is, not having the sense of belonging or the emotional support we all take for granted every day? There are thousands of children in Rwanda, Sierra Leone, South Africa and Sudan who are living in desperate conditions, believing that there is no hope for them of a better future. With your help, Hope and Homes for Children can offer these children the lifeline they need to turn their lives around.

Here comes the science bit... concentrate!

In an average of just three years and at a cost of only £500 per year, Hope and Homes for Children can provide the professional expertise and resources needed to help a family become self-reliant. Each family they work with is individually assessed. They then create a tailored support plan for each family through our Active Family Support Programme.

There are five main areas on which Project Ubuntu focuses and these are: Living Conditions, Health, Education, Family Relationships and Household Income as well as any emergency care that may be needed initially to simply keep the family alive. Assistance might include paying of school fees, providing healthcare or funding vocational training. The final aim is to work towards each family achieving independence and self-sufficiency by the end of the three-year programme, this is already starting to happen.

Ubuntu is an african word that translates simply as 'humanity to others.' Archibishop Desmond Tutu described Ubuntu as 'the essence of being human- when you have the quality of ubuntu you are known for your generosity'. I am confident you, my lovely friends, have this special quality. So please, dig deep!

I'm so excited to be running to raise money for this wholly worthwhile charity. Hope and Homes for Children is a remarkable, amazing organisation and I know for a fact the difference your kind donations will make to some very special children's lives. On their behalf, thank you.

Orphanages do not protect children. They harm them. We are working towards a day when every child can grow up in a loving family. There are millions of children across the world confined to loveless orphanages. Over 80% of them are not orphans. It doesn’t have to be this way.
