We help people with a learning disability to live their lives as they choose.

Story

Thank you for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

After supporting various family and friends do amazing challenges, I thought it was about time I did something myself. So after having Zach, I decided working part time and looking after 2 children wasn’t a hard enough challenge; I signed up to Trek Mount Kilimanjaro in November. I have chosen to raise money for Mencap, who I work for.

The money you donate will help to make a positive difference to the 1.5 million people with a learning disability living in the UK. Most are treated as ‘different’, and do not have the same control over their lives as other members of society. That’s why Mencap is here. They work with people with a learning disability to change laws and services, challenge prejudice and directly support thousands of people to live their lives as they choose.

What your sponsorship money does at Mencap  … the difference you make!

£12 helps someone with a learning disability find their first work placement;

£24 could provide an advice pack for families who have a new baby with a learning disability;

£36 could help people with a learning disability to learn new skills and make friends at a garden project;

At the other end of the spectrum, £25,000 enables Mencap to fund 1,500 job coaching sessions: supporting approximately 50-60 people.

Segal House, Mencap’s specialised nursery for children with a learning disability, caters for up to 50 children between the ages of 2 and 5, and for which they have to fund raise £80,000+ p.a. just to keep the doors open:

£100 pays for a nursery assistant to do a workshop to learn sign language to teach children with speech and language difficulties;

£800 would buy one standing frame for a child who cannot stand up. This helps develop their balance and weight bearing ability;

£895 buys a bubble tube that calms and relaxes children with behavioural difficulties. The visual effects it produces are a focus point for profoundly disabled children;

£1,200 would pay for a specialised chair for children with profound and multiple disabilities. This type of equipment helps prevent further deformities as bones and muscles develop while ensuring the child is as comfortable as possible, and safe!

Donating through JustGiving is simple, fast and totally secure. Your details are safe with JustGiving - they'll never sell them on or send unwanted emails. Once you donate, they'll send your money directly to the charity and make sure Gift Aid is reclaimed on every eligible donation by a UK taxpayer. So it's the most efficient way to donate - I raise more, whilst saving time and cutting costs for the charity.

Any donations would be greatly appreciated. Thank you very much.

Well, I had better start training!
