WHAT?
I am going to Conquer the Alps. No really, I am going to ride my bike (lucky to those who ears aren't bleeding about how much I talk about said bike) 315km up and down mountains.
There are six main climbs involved in this challenge, for those mountaineers amongst you: three of these climbs are Hors Coategorie, or 'beyond categorization', the most famous being the Col de la Madeleine - a 24.5Km climb at an 11% gradient - aka 'The Killer'. My journey (or torture mission) will begin and end in Geneva, Switzerland.
WHEN?
15 - 19th September 2010
WHY?
Last year my mum was diagnosed with cancer. Thankfully, she has now beaten it. Whilst mum is "in the clear" now, it still means regular, ongoing check ups as well as living with the after effects of chemotherapy.
She has also lived with two types of arthritis since her early thirties - rheumatoid and psoriatic. My mum is one of the most inspirational women I know: On top of her illness she not only managed to raise three high-energy, mischievous children, she has run two of her own successful businesses, managed a menagerie of animals, and always got a decent meal on the table each night!
Conquering extreme challenges is in my breeding - and whilst cycling across the Alps is going to be a breeze compared to chemotherapy and radiation treatment, I think I'm in a pretty good place start with.
WHO?
A huge thanks to my company, ThoughtWorks, for making the challenge possible through an initial sponsorship.
We live in a time of revolutionary change. From medicine to music to
friendship to famine relief, technology is unleashing human potential
and transforming our world. And yet businesses today struggle to
deliver software projects fast and predictably. At ThoughtWorks we are
passionate about software and technology as tools for social
improvement, and our goal as an organization is nothing short of
revolutionizing the creation and delivery of software to that end. www.thoughtworks.com
THE MONEY, HONEY
I will be raising money for Macmillan Cancer Support - a charity who works to improve the lives of people affected by cancer. They provide practical, medical and financial support and push for better cancer care. Cancer affects us all. We can all help. www.macmillan.org.uk
I must raise a minimum of £1,800 to make a significant impact - however I am really hoping to make it to £2,000.
Your support will mean so much, and every penny counts!
IT DOESN'T END HERE...
In addition to Conquering the Alps, I'll also be running to raise funds. So far I'm signed to complete the Adidas Womens 5km on 5th September, as well as the Richmond Riverside 10km on 16th of October.
